This is half off topic and half OEM/Modified tech.

When i bought my xj about a year ago id only been reading this site for about a month......and was a total newb to the x, but new it was what i wanted. i have since been reading for about a year and feel like i could perform brain surgery on it if i have to (thanks for all the great info, will be joining within days, just turned 18 (required age) and just got out of highschool for good so been busy, CANT WAIT to contribute to something i use so much)

anyways, i didnt know much, but i knew my first money going into the xj would be some cool black steel wheels to match my cool black paint (ha).

Les Schwab, the dominating tire dealer in most of the west, sold me the wheels, about 3-5 months after i got the xj (dont remember exactly, gotta check reciept/warranty). So were talkin about 7-9 months ago. At the time, i didnt need new tires. I am running a 235/75/r15 toyo AT on stock suspension.

since then (correct me if im wrong) i have learned that is WAY too wide a wheel for that tire. it seems like people are running 33s on 15X8s....

i can disticnctly remember the conversation i had at les schwab.

me: i want these black steel wheels
schwab: ok. here are your cool black steel wheels in a 15x8.
me: is that the same size i have now
schwab: no
me: is that ok
schwab: yes. they are a little wide but .....uh........they will be fine.
me: uhm ok are you sure
schwab: yes. plus, if you ever want to lift it, you can run a bigger tire that way.
me: cool thanks
schwab: hey come to us for a lift too!
me: right...id probably do it myself, and not with a Tuff Country 3.5" rear block. thanks bye.

so.....what do i do? are they right, a 15x8 is fine on a 235? becase i have definately posted and asked on a few boards and poeple are like Hell No...

i see it as a few options

if they are too wide and shoudlnt have been sold to me not knowing at the time, go in, ask for new wheels on the house in a 15x7, buy my new tires

lift it 2 inches say nothing to them, run a 30" tire, but should i even be running a 15x8 for that tire?

be a complete dick, flip them the bird, fart on the way out, go buy cheap wheels and a name brand tire not les schwabs at 4 wheel parts, sell 15X8s cut my losses

ok so basically my way too long post comes to 2 questions
should they have sold me and installed that wide of a wheel knowing i wasnt gonna run a 31-33 or whatever any time soon?

and if that is the case what to do?

Trying to follow all of that, you got a 15x8? Put on a 2" BB, run some 30x9.50s and call it good.

Yup, that'll work... what did you get for backspacing ?

15x8 shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep the tires aired up properly. If you airdown for a trail they might break the bead, but I ran 15x8's with 235's with no problem. I would say you got a better deal, since most oversize tires wont fit on 15x7 rims. Check your receipt and see if they are 4.5" backspaced though.

8" wide wheels will work okay with a 235/75x15 tire, but you'll have to take a little care with setting the tire pressure. Do a chalk test and then check the pressure regularly.

Also, yes, you should complain. Anyone who has graduated from high school should be able to put together a real sentence. I would suggest a strong complaint to your local school district IMMEDIATELY!
