Im planning on getting an Auburn LSD installed (8.25), but the price I was quoted locally (and , by the sound of it, they had never done it before) was $450 for the labor. (I found the unit itself online for about $340) Well, anyone know any shops who have done this before? If this turns out to be a pain in my azz, then I might go for a truetrack in the front D30. Thats a DIY, isn't it?
No. Both an Auburn and a Truetrac are a full carrier replacement, and that's why the labor cost is higher. Technically, there are no drop-in limited slips -- although I have read a review suggesting that the Detroit gearless locker is more or less a limited slip since it uses clutches to "lock."
Thanks,. What else is needed for an auburn install (other than fluid, additive& gasket stuff) ? Anyone happen to know how a Detroit gearless locker acts on the street?
I heard that about the gearless at first too, and then I heard nothing about it. Not a very popular locker. I wonder if taking out some of the clutches makes it act more like a LSD?
Anyway, 450 seems a little steep, but I know people who charge more. Shop around at litte mom and pop-racing shops. It might sound weird, but you may also want to check in on some of the new "tuner" shops that cater to imports. Sometimes you can find an old timer who works there that may charge significantly less.
Local speed shop in Nashville wanted 150 dollars per axle, local garage 15 miles away wanted 350 per.
got it down to $165 labor + the install 'kit' (what would that be, bearings?) $55 and they have the best price on the unit itself (auburn) @ $311 = about $530

Gearless is not made for the 8,25 so no need to think about that. Just seems so much cheaper to put in an ez locker. it seems like you need to pay more for a daily drive with off road capability .
