I just bought a house that has a 30x60 detached shop. I just tossed everything in there while moving, I am now thinking about layout of the shop and want to gather some opinoins.

should be a rough scale (walls that are shown are actually there, not my plan)

let me know your thoughts on a layout

Paint the exterior of the building camo! No one will be able to find you.

nice lookin shop, i'm jealous. i'd probably put another roll up door or two in there. that way you dont have to move a bunch of stuff to get vehicles on the left side if you ever needed to.

Not much on layout, but here's some ideas.
If you plan on keeping this house for awhile, plan now for stationary tools, even if not currently on your radar (mill, standing drill press, plasma table, etc). I'd run 110/220 and shop air either overhead with drop downs or at least on each wall in strategic locations.

Lighting, can't have too much. 8' fluorescents are cheap put more than you think you need with extra switches for the extra lights.

I would consider putting a wood top bench all along that back wall, with cabinets overhead.

Would be nice to have a stand alone massive 1/2" thick steel top welding table with HD vice. If you don't have one now, you'll want one.

Think about material storage, sheet goods and long 20' lengths of DOM, etc. Would be nice to store this stuff inside if you have the room.

Does that furnace have ducting in place?

Where is the refridgerator/beer storage? If you need a hand I am not too far and could help on weekends. I also have a pretty good hook up on steel at work, if you wanted to make some stands or fixtures or anything

Argh... I have shop envy! VT98XJ, are you planning on combining paint & sand blast in the same section? Don't you want a paint booth to be as sterile as possible? I'm no autobody expert, but that sounds kinda weird. Like 962door, I'm not too far away and could help a bit on weekends too!

It is set-up pretty decent already, the previous owner used it for a business so it has 110/220 and 2 rows of fluorescent in the main room, some need to be fixed/replaced. I plan on doing the 30"x36"x96" sections for benchs and a few sections of 30"x72"x96" for storage from Menards.

The furnace is in-place with all the ducting. I have not fired up the furnace because I really not have had a chance to look it over and clean it. It is in the neighborhood of 30 years old... I am going to find a used furnace to swap in sometime this summer.

I know what you are saying, I am not really sure what I am going to use the room for, I know I want to keep paint and blast out of the main room in order to contain the mess. I don't think I would ever do a "professional" restoration paint job in there. probably rattle can bumpers, etc.

I have a lot of cleaning to do, I think I am going to toss a coat of paint on the walls when it warms up a little. Anyone ever use one of those power sprayers?

Any time you wisconsin guys want to stop by feel free...

Nice space on the inside. I would put an air compressor in the storage area to keep shop noise levels down. Perhaps even build an insulated enclosure for it with a vent to outside. Sure would be nice to have a two post hoist! I'm sure you could get creative and raise the ceiling above a hoist.

I've used a Wagner paint sprayer on a section of fence. Was more of a PITA than it was worth. I'm sure a professional sprayer would make short work of brightening things up.

PM me when clean up day is and I'll head north.

Beautiful shop, lots of potential. You didnt really mention what you plan on doing in this shop, but i drew up what I might want to do with such a location.

If youre planning on doing sandblasting, try to do it outside of your shop. My old work tried moving the media blasting guys inside during the winter months and it was a mess. Sand/soda gets everywhere! Even with a blast cabinet.

Aside from that... :worship:

So jealous. I would LOVE to have a shop like that. Rent a paint sprayer from Home Depot, paint them walls and throw a coat of Sherwin Williams Armor Guard on the floor...place would look tits!

What kind of business did the guy have in that shop?

I like the layout XCM, very close to what I was thinking.

Unfortunately I think I am going to need to do a little de-construction before paint. Snow and water buildup on the outer walls has allowed water to get in. If you look at the pics, you can see some black stains (mold/mildew) especially in the main room. I am not too worried about the drywall but what is behind it... I think I am going to tear out the lower half of the drywall, insulation and re-sheet rock.

To stop the water entry, I am going to dig a mote and fill it with course stone on the North and West walls.

The pervious owner was a cabinet maker, the "storage" room was completely filled with sawdust. I have spent several hours cleaning the one room so far.
