what are the effects of mounting a shock closer to the tire or closer to the diff?
less stability? more flex?

With the shocks closer to the center, they will have less control over the tire, but the tire will be able to travel more with the shock traveling the same distance. The opposite goes for mounting them farther out on the axle.
