Semi-metallic pads

Has anybody had trouble with semi-metallic pads on your rotors? I bought rotos and pads last year and within 5 months, I heard them squealing. I replaced the rotors (still under warranty), and left the existing pads and I hear more squealing. If the '91 rotors were not designed for semi-metallic, would that create more heat than what they can handle and warp?

Brake noise is going to happen now that we don't use the soft asbestos brake pads/shoes. Unless of course ya use the much more expensive carbon fiber, etc. ones. Basically you have a metal rotor and are pressing it with a metal or partial metal pad/shoe. My '93 is running semi-metallics with some squeal but works great.

I spoke to the parts guy at Jeep and he says that the rears might not be adjusted properly which is causing the front to work that much harder. Sounds feasable and I do remember ahearing about the rears needing to be manually adjusted because the self-adjusting thing is crap. I will check it out tonight.

Carbon fiber pads aren't all that expensive. Auto Zone carries the Performance Friction line (in fact, my local AZ stocks 'em for the '88 XJ) and they don't cost a whole lot more than the El Cheapo stuff.

Stay away from the AZ el cheapos. I got a set of those pads and cant go anywhere without brakes squealing as loud as possible.

Amen to that! I thought it was the new rotors that I bought at the same time but I had them turned with just a bit taken off after about a weeks use and the same thing. These are coming off this weekend.

Be thankful you're not driving a newer VW. The rotors don't last more than two brake changes usually.

Eagle, thanks, I'll have to check them out. I priced the things at Car Quest and about had a heart attack. My work van goes thru brakes like candy and it really irritates folks when you come squealing up at 0100 in the morning. Specially if they're already upset cause the basement is flooded with "brown trout"
