self etching primers-- worth it?

I spray bombed my newest project using Dupli-Color etching primer, but it has ti sit outdoors for a while (read probably forever) and was curious if anyone had experience with this stuff. Is it going to absorb or allow moisture to permeate if I don't seal/ top coat it quickly??

Yes it will collect/absorb moisture. You need to seal it. Why did you use self etch if I may ask? Did you bring it down to bare metal? That would be the only reason I would do the whole thing in self etch. At this stage I would primer it then top coat it. If you had no bare metal spots on the old original paint you could have just scuffed it up pretty good(till no more gloss was anywhere) and then top coated(color coat) it then clear coated it.
 
If you where going for the olive drab look you (in my opinion) could have gotten the stuff from many suppliers including most of the larger arm surplus stores usually sell it in gallons but then you would have to have a spray gun to put it on.
 
yeah, I figured it would need a sealer..... poop!

had the etching primer from previous project, so I figured a couple more cans would keep it one color. It's just a base for me to pretty much sand through bye the time I'm done, but it needed to be one color so the neighbors would stop P'ing and moaning about it's multi-colored hue. (condo life sux sometimes)

I knew the complete coat of etching primer was "overkill" for the few spots that were bare, but is there any reason it would be considered a "BAD" idea-
e.g.- poor adhesion on paint or incompatibility with other paints? It seemed like, since I had it, it would only be better.

No, not looking for O.D., and I've got a gun for the final project-- just temporary color:spin1:
 
It is only a bad idea if you didn't get all the wax and silicone off the paint before you painted. An old painter I knew 35 years ago taught me a trick. He just took a scrub brush and Comet cleanser to the whole rig, then washed it down with water, then wiped it with lacquer thinner. The scrub brush gets in the corners and cracks. I have painted probably a dozen school buses over the years using this technique and never had a problem even though they always sit out in the sun and weather here in Colorado.
 
That's the same stuff ( same color too ) that I used when I rebuilt my engine. :firedevil I top-coated it with their clear ceramic. it looks good ! its been 6 months now and I have not seen any sign of loose paint or peeling. I'm very pleased with the result.
