Scangauge shuts off after random minutes

Hi,

I've been using a ScanGauge II on my 2000 XJ Sport, and after a period of time it just shuts off like it isn't getting power anymore. The time ranges from 5 minutes on up to as much as 30 minutes, but if I'm driving far enough, it always shuts off.

The ScanGauge itself works great. I also use it on two other vehicles regularly and it NEVER has a problem with those. So it has to be the Jeep.

Other info: The Jeep is running perfectly, no codes for more than 6 months now. I've traded out the Scangauge cable also to make sure that wasn't the problem.

The only thing I can think of is the OBD II connector itself? Maybe a wire working it's way loose in the connector, and after it gets warm it separates? I have noticed that the shorter times are on warmer days.

I'd appreciate any suggestions!

My dads does this in his XJ and his ZJ but not in his motor home or in my XJ. I know this doesn't help answer your question but at least you aren't alone.

This happened with mine as well, and I've read similar claims from someone using an Ultragauge in their XJ. I bought a second cable, which made no difference, and I've had no issues with the Bluetooth OBDII adapter that I'm using now, so I don't think it was an issue with the connectors.

Mine does the same thing also. No rhyme or reason, Sometimes on all day (rarely), usually shuts off three or four times in my fifteen mile commute. The Ultragauge, while in my '96 or our Outback never turns off, although it will blink off and right back on periodically, seemingly resetting itself. At first I thought it was the heat affecting the Scangauge, as it got worse during the summer, but now that it's cooler, it seems to shut off just as often. So maybe it's just a JEEP thing?

My Ultragauge has never shut off or reset itself in the year and a half that I've had it.

I just got this e-mail back from the ScanGauge people, in response to an e-mail I shot them, asking about the random shut-off problem:

Ray,

This is an issue we have seen with older Chrysler models. Specifically it has to do with the ISO protocol. Essentially what is happening is the information is moving too fast or too slow and the vehicle stops responding thus causing the unit to shut off. One thing we have found that fixes this is changing the update rate to slow or fast as well changing the sleep event. Both of these settings are located in the Advanced Settings. To access this select MORE>SETUP>scroll to ADV SETTINGS>EDIT.

I finally got back here to check on this thread I started.

Thank You!! That actually makes some sense! I will play with that this weekend, although I hope that changing the settings to work with the Jeep doesn't bother it when using it in the the other two vehicles.

But, thanks again for checking with ScanGauge. I was so busy blaming the Jeep that I didn't think of checking with them!

I also changed the update rate to FAST, and so far, it seems happy. It hasn't cut out since, and the MPG figures seem to correct faster. I put up with it cutting off for the last six months, thinking there was something wrong with my unit.

I've also experimented with the 'sleep mode'. I forget what it's set to now, and I'm afraid to go look...

Meanwhile, the Ultragauge, currently in my wife's Outback, continues to soldier on. I had to turn its alarms off, as it always thinks the car is out of gas, or needs an oil change (drives her nuts!). What I like about the Ultragauge is that the screen has eight displays, and about three dozen displayable choices to choose from. At about half the price of the ScanGaugeII.

I had to set my Scangauge to ISO not auto to get it to work in the Jeep. I haven't used it in a while as I removed it to read the codes on a friend's Xterra and never put it back.
