Scan guage 2 question

I'm not a computer programmer, and I had to enter hex codes. It seems to me that some of the optional entries would be logical defaults.

I use the SCII in my three vehicles. The motorhome's transmission has a temperature sensor and to read it requires entering the optional code. It looks daunting but it was not that big a deal.
If an old guy like me can do it, you youngsters should not have a problem.

As I mentioned before, ScanGuage has good customer service, give them a call if you have problems.

Yeah, it's entirely doable- I wanted to see injector trim, and I managed that. Just saying that it could do a little more out of the box.

If you look at the XGAUGEcommands pdf, it's the first string- Short Term Fuel Trim Bank 1- I think- I have it highlighted on my printout.

I don't know if I ever got around to trying the long term. I don't fully understand this thing yet. I just got as far as getting the data I wanted, and stopped.

It sounds like you've already written the Scan Gauge II off as something you don't like, but I encourage you to give it another chance. Perhaps you need to sit down and read the manual for it first; there's only so much "user friendliness" you can cram into a computer with just five buttons!

When you turn on your vehicle and are presented with the initial "home screen", just push the TRIP button, which is designed to show exactly what you're looking for. Pages 9 - 12 of the manual explain exactly how to show trip data including both trip and tank MPG out-of-the-box - easily!

I'm a computer programmer by trade, and even I've never had to resort to entering hexidecimal codes into the SGII, despite being a habitual tinkerer. Really, the UI isn't bad at all considering how much information it can show you out of the box and how spartan the hardware is.

The most important "tunings" required for having the SGII show accurate fuel efficiency data are:

 • Telling the SGII your engine displacement (page 14 - 15)
 • Telling the SGII your fuel tank size (page 15)
 • Remembering to hit the "FILLUP" button when you fill your gas tank (page 18 - 20)
 • Correcting for a difference between your odometer/speedometer and reality (page 16)

I don't recall ever seeing trip mpg on the trip page.. it shows miles to empty and gallons used IIRC.

I know how to enter the hex codes. I successfully did it for the horsepower X guage. But I haven't succeeded since then. It always stops accepting input at some point.

There is absolutely no excuse for not storing EVERY X guage in the device. A few kilobytes of flash memory isn't that expensive. They're just sloppy/lazy.

Why buy a Scanguage when there are more polished products out there for a few bucks more? I spend all day every day using software designed by programmers with no concept of usability (aside from "you'll get used to it"), and if I had a choice at the time where to spend my money, I wouldn't have plunked down $150 for the same crap in a black box.

I have mine on top the mirror, cable is just long enough.

As far as clearing codes, mine wouldnt work untill i tried this.

Shut the truck off, let the scanguage shut off by itself. Unplug it, turn the ignition to run and then plug in the scanguage. Let it connect then clear codes. Worked for me
