rolled my 88

swoop

NAXJA Forum User
darn it. i rolled my 88 into a swamp and its all messed up. everyone lived with only minor scratches and what not. the passenger in the back dislocted his shoulder. crumpled the roof a bit and broke a few windows and broke the front left lower shock mount. and the engine was completly submerged in the swamp. the interior is all wet and there is still swamp water in the bottom. how would i go about trying to start it? it did leak a lot of fuel and maybe other fluids. im very glad everyone lived cause the passenger allmost drowned but we pulled her out.

well... I think that you wanna drain all fluids and fill with fresh stuff... Then remove all plugs and crank it couple times to make sure there is no swamp crap inside the engine

then start for a short time (15 mintes?) and drain again and fill up again... and repeat couple times....

Good Luck

P.S. Oh.. before starting the first time around, make sure that all electrical is DRY. If it's wet, let it dry, but don't let that stop you from draining bad fluids!

Damn dude I feel for ya!

Hate to be a rubber necker, but do you have any pics?

my buddy tooka few picks after it got towed back to my place. and the cop took a few of it in the swamp but i doubt i can get those. thanks for the response kejtar. the tow truck guy said the same thing so im glad i got it confirmed. well i still got my '90 ltd. maybe i can take the rustys 4.5" of my ol 88 and throw it under my '90 with only 3". bummer part is the engine in the '88 was fully rebuilt about 3000 miles ago with new water pump radiator. the rear 35c was rebuilt just 10000 miles ago and i put the leather becnch from my 90 in it that morning. drat what a bad mothers day. oh and its the left lca mount thats broke not the shock mount.

swoop don't give up on it..... the oils will not cost you that much to go through what I just mentioned and if you didn't run in the water (or didn't run too long) there is a chance that you are "SAVED" lol...... I definately recommend to move quick on it though as if you got any water in there.. the longer you wait the worse it will get

guess I lucked out, when my 89 was submerged for a couple hours last weekend. The engine died under water and I thought I was in big trouble. I've had this hapen befor with a bad outcome. This time all that was lost was the carpet and electric fan. The only thing that had water in it was the distributer, rear end, and the floor. That last one was a big surprise, seeing how the water was over my legs while sitting in the seat. After being pulled out she fired right up.

i think it shut off when the wheels left the ground. i know s-10 blazers will shut of if and not start if a wheel or two is off the ground, however it was leaking fuel upside down with all four wheels obvously off the ground, like the fuel pump was still working. think i may find a MJ thats barely running and swap everything, like the lift and what not. we will see.

well i drained the oil, and there was still 6 quarts in it, however there was also, 6 quarts of water.

the trany, t-case and diffs didnt even get wet so should i still drain them? and the coolant is a closed system so does it need to be drained? and where do i drain the power steering fluid? am i missing anything else to drain?

Yep, as has been said, change them all. Oil is cheap. If there is a significant amount of water in anything. Run the vehicle for a few minutes and drain again. Do this until all the water is gone. There should be no milky look to the oil at all.
