so i have a 88' d30/35 with a pukegoat and 307's/open looking to at least go trac loc...prefurably a detriot...but my jeep is a dog on the road with a decent grade (great off raod though...the more throtle...the worse it seems to get)...got to down shift and i feel like a tractor trailer creeping up a hill...so i have a "doner" 89 auto i am looking to get he the 354's out of...unless i can just get 373's for my 307 carrier (did some searching...doesen't look like its posible)

how hard it is to swap carriers (i have a jeep tech i can ask to do the lash)?

thanks

The D30 will need a carrier for anything higher than 3.54.

so can just regear my current carriers to 3:54.1's? and not have to upgrade the carrier...but if i want 373's i have to upgrade?

Exactly. You'll still notice a big difference from the 3.07's to 3.54's, not as much as 3.73's but still enough to get you up the hills without a hard time.

you'll prob save time and frustration by just pulling the entire axles and swaping them over gear setup is not an easy undertaking for a first time gear installer. and used gears rarely setup right.

Amen to that!

Swapped my 3.07 , ax15 w/ 3.54 from a/t. Feels much better but need 3.73 for steep hills. Already had the 3.54 axles w/rr disc and slotted front rotors.

Exactly what I'm doing. The way I see it, I've increased my tire size by about ten per cent (225s to 31s) and lowered my gear ratio by more than ten percent (3.07s to 3.55s). So my gears will feel lower than they did when I had stock gearing and stock tires. That's the plan at least; I still haven't driven the thing.

thats exactly how its gonna be for you.. i was at about 12% under by GPS odometer..

Ha, and that's the exact same thing I did! Couple years ago my front axle bearings went out while finances were a lil tight. My buddies and I decided it'd be cheaper and easier to just go to the Pick-N-Pull and get a whole new front axle to install rather than replace the bearings. Went to the junkyard over the period of a couple weeks but couldn't find anything but automatics with 3:55s. We finally decided what the hay, we'll buy a front axle w/3:55s, install it and keep the front driveshaft off so I wouldn't even be tempted to put it in 4wheel until I could regear the back. As luck would have it, a month or so later I sheared the bolts in the yoke on my rear axle and it was the perfect excuse to finally go get my rear w/3:55s!! So basically I regeared my XJ for $100/axle and never even hadda take the diff. cover off other than to visually check the gears and change fluids. Plus, I went from an open to locked rear!! I've still got stock susp. and tires (but can still go most places even the biggest boys can't!) but the 3:55s made a big difference from the 3:07s. Sorry, I'm just tired and bored and felt like sharing my story!!

y dont u go look for a d44 with 355s that what i did, and sell everything u dont need to make up for the cost
