Questions about a Grand Cherokee

I've been hip deep in XJ's for over a dozen years but have little experience with Grand Cherokees. A friends son is turning 16 and his dad found a nice 94 Grand with the 5.3 and full time 4wd. The problem is that the tcase is supposedly fubar'd.

Can anybody tell me what tcase is normally in that vehicle?

They say it is making a lot of noise. Is there a common culprit for this. I have overhauled half a dozen NP231's and have all the tools, so if it is a straightforward fix I may offer to help. Otherwise, does anybody have a cheap used tcase.

I haven't had a chance to start it and drive it yet so everything is hearsay at this time.

NP249

Typically the viscous coupling fails... here's a thread on how to fix it:

Another common fix though is removing it and replacing it with a 231 or a 242.

I would recommend swapping in a 231 or 242 in place of the POS 249. Since the V8 ZJ's use the chryco trans you can use a t-case from most any 4wd mopar vehicle. Would probably help mileage a bit also, since it wouldn't be a "fool" time t-case.
