Project: 2000 XJ Resurrection

Same thing on the tank on the MJ we picked up, the gas left a brown varnish inside the tank. You can take it to radiator shops and they can clean it out for you for around $20 or so.

Some more pics.

Drove the XJ on Sunday. It went from great oil pressure to no oil pressure in a bout 10 miles. Got it back home, took the oil cap off to see if oil was move to the rocker arms and saw none. Then started hearing rocker chatter so I reved it to see if oil would come to the top but got none. It did over heat and lost a lot of coolant from the overflow tank.

Time to pull the oil pan and value cover. What is the best was to test the oil pump?

When mine did that I swapped on a Wix filter and the problem went away. Fluke or not, it worked. I also switched to a 15W40 semi-synthetic diesel engine oil and oil pressure has looked good since. That was at least 1.5 years ago.

My oil pressure would drop to zero at red lights and stop signs. I got used to it for a while. Then not too long afterwards my oil pressure topped out on the guage. I figure its a bad sending unit. I don't know why I'm mentioning this because you said you don't even see oil flowing where it needs to. Good luck with it TRT! If you are fee on fridays and need help I'll make the drive to chapel hill to give you a hand.

How's the clearance between the pan and pump pickup tube? I've seen alot of threads on here about people having low or no oil pressure after working on the engine and it was a result of the oil pump not being fully seated or the tube and filter screen being to close to the pan. Either way it doesn't sound like it's the filter problem because of the fact of not seeing any oil up top. If you pull the valve cover completely maybe there is oil coming up just wasn't showing where you were looking.
