Potential New Wheeling Venue

NAC chapter members in the more southerly parts of our chapter area have Paragon, Rausch Creek, and the NJ Pine Barrens for wheeling. Those who are too far from there and not close to northern Maine have a more difficult time finding places to wheel.

Seems someone is trying to organize a wheeling park similar to Paragon at an old ski area called Mount Whittier in New Hampshire. There's a lengthy thread discussing it on the Northeast Online Wheelers forum at http://forum.neow.net/index.php?showtopic=21399&st=0

I'd like to get a sense of who in the NAC might be interested in doing one or more chapter events per year there. Initially, if there's interest we should probably hold an event as a way of checking the place out, then proceed based on what we find.

In the past, we have participated in trail cutting work days at Paragon and later at Rausch Creek. I hope these will continue, because it's an enjoyable way to spend a day, and it helps NAXJA and the chapter develop a "presence" and credibility with these venues. If the opportunity becomes available to participate in work days at Mt. Whittier, would enough people be interested to make up a viable work team? If interested, please sound off in this thread. (And for this inquiry, "interested" means "Yes, if it happens I'll definitely be there" not "Yeah, maybe, lemme think about it." -- I understand that trail cutting isn't something that everyone enjoys, but if I'm going to approach this guy on behalf of the chapter and promise him a work crew, it's not going to help either him or us if 20 people said "Yeah" but only two show up.)

Also, how far are people willing to travel to wheel a legal, organized venue? For me, Paragon is 200 miles and 4 hours, Rausch Creek a bit farther. Does anyone else (besides Lawn Cher) travel as far, or farther, to wheel?

I remember reading about this place some months ago on PBB, and was wondering if it was going to bear any fruit. Seems like the previous proprietor burned a lot of bridges (with the landowners and community) Hopefully the new folks getting it going again can overcome that.

Geez guys! About 4 weeks ago I pulled this in and no one said anything. :D

With an Avatar like yours, we're all afraid to respond.

Actually, I saw that, but forgot to comment. While it's probably too far to help out on regular trail maintenance day, I think it's well within range and would look forward to trying something up there. No worse for us Mid-Atlantic guys headed up there for a formal weekend event, than the New Englanders headed down to PA for an annual event like NACFest. Heck, it's not like any of us have a lot of stuff in the backyard like the guys out West. And, it's a lot closer than the 33 hour drive to Moab! I hope they can pull it off.

Eagle, you knew I'd consider making that trip, didn't you? Hopefully I'll make it back out in the fall one of these years for a New England event.

This looks like it's gonna be good!

My landlord recently pointed out almost 50 acres of land for sale in maine for $15,000 that says "wicked good hunting and fishing" in the ad.

I was kinda thinkin off-road park/shop myself.

depending how the events of the next few weeks pan out, I may start pursuing that

even though paragon's about 50x the size of this...

Where in Maine?

Need a partner? :greensmok
