Post gear set up noise question

I removed my 8.25 Auburn today and installed my welded open carrier. No change in pinion. Backlash on the Auburn had opened up from .0065 to .014 after 2.5 years. Today I set it at ~.0055. Kinda tight? I measured at 4 points on the carrier and it was within one half of one thousandth all the way around. No carrier bearing play at all...maybe .0005", maybe. Both adjusters are snug and locked in. I get a slightly noticable "shiff shiff shiff" noise when driving. More noticable on coast, but I think that's because I can't hear the engine. Should I be concerned? The frequency of the noise is definately relative to speed. It's a scuffing type noise, not a clanking or cluncking. Could it just be my brakes reseating or something?
Thanks,
KY Chris

I'm not sure how the 8.25 is shimmed. Did you use a different thickness shim stack to set your l/s carrier when it was installed? Go pull a pattern and see what it looks like. I'm thinkin' you need to reset the thing. Backlash is only a part of the equation to getting gears right, which I'm sure you know.

ky only pulled the carrier out to weld it up.

the pinion was never removed.

the 8 1/4 uses adjusters, so ky can dial in the backlash he desires....

I advised him to tighten up the backlash a bit, that .014 was not what he wanted.....he needs to be within .006-.008, i advised to be on the wee bit tighter side of spec.

.0055 sounds good to me IMHO.

KY also asked me if he should pull a pattern, I said he could if he was curious, but it would almost be unecessary, assuming the previous set-up was good with an initial .0065 backlash.....the fact that he is using a dial indicator to adjust his backlash is really the only thing that he needs to do.....

the difference between the previous INSTALLED backlash, and the one he is running around with now is a mere .001".....this will open up in-spec.

the fact that you have a swish-swish sound, leads me to believe its just your drum brakes....

any noise that may have developed from you messin with your dip would more than likely sound more like a hum or growl, or whirr.....insert poetry....

that's my story anyway....

Kinda what I figured with the drums maybe. It's definately more of a chafing or rubbing sound that a clank or hum. I drove it around the block this morning and didn't hear the sound. I'll be out of town for a few days so I'll have to wait til the weekend to drive it again. Thanks for the help, guys.

If your backlash 'wore into' 14 thou, you sohold set it back to that. Anything else, and you won't be making a full contact pattern because you'll be 'outta da groove.'

Please explain this. Sounds like a change in carriers to me. Disregard anything I said if it was the same carrier.

explain what?

yeah, he changed carriers....so what.

the only necessary adjustment is backlash.

pinion depth did not and cannot change.

its the same ring gear.

damn newbie.

dan, the increase in backlash is do to the carrier bearings, and only a minor amount of gear break in.

believe me, the ring gear did not wear .008" worth!

if so, KY would have noticed a gooey metallic dough-wad at the bottom of his diff....

if tightening up the backlash like he did affected the "sweet spot" negatively, he would have a howling differential right now.....
