One of THOSE days...

So I lost my trailer this morning... and blew up my XJ this afternoon. :banghead:

I went out to a friend's place out east to blow off some steam and do a little moderate wheeling to see how the XJ performed. It did pretty well overall so I let my GF drive it to see if she liked how it 'wheeled. She did well until we got to a steep hillclimb. At that point, I think something in the rear turned loose, but we didn't notice right away because it was slick and we figured that being open with AT's was the culprit. Everything else seemed fine so we continued on

So we drive around the trails for a few more minutes and hit a shady spot in a gully with some mud in it from the snowmelt and get hung up. We rocked it a few times and then we traded so that I could try to get it out... yep, you guessed it, the D30 passenger's shaft went :explosion. So I put it in 2wd and couldn't go anywhere either... Hmmmm.....

Is it bad when the speedo says 60MPH and you're not moving? And no tires are turning? The driveshaft spins and there's no noticable noise from the rear at all... and no movement from the tires either.

All four wheels stayed on it as we got dragged back to the shop by the stock CJ7 so I'm going to guess it was spiders or the R/P that died. I'll make sure to post pics.

Did I mention that two hours before all this happened I finally went to the DMV and got the title paperwork done and put real plates on it? Yep, finally mine and I grenade it two hours later... looks like a wonderful start to a relationship.

Anyway, just thought I'd vent... hopefully I got all my breakage out of the way before Moab.

Joe

PS: Does anyone have a D30 and D35 lying around that I could borrow until I can get something stouter built? Should only be a month or so... tops.

Having people loan you parts with a name like Crash???????? :jester:

your rear end explosion sounds familiar - you don't have an older trac-loc back there do you? I literally split a trac-loc carrier in two in my old Scout D44 - driveshaft turned, pinion turned, ring gear turned, but not wheels... that sucks, you should be due for some good karma after a day like that.:gag:

No idea what's in there yet... I bought it used and never looked. If it was a trash-loc, it wasn't working at all.

We're heading out to go drag it home now so that I can pop the cover and see what's fragged.

Oh, and I located a set of loaner axles... Thanks Led.

Cool - it was Led that hooked me up when mine exploded too!:guitar:

Well, I got the rear diff opened up and the spider gears are :explosion. The two not attached to the axleshafts are in multiple pieces in the bottom of the diff.

Pics will be available when I get them uploaded.

I've got a Toy 8" from a 99 4Runner that's going under it as soon as I get all my lift parts together. I'd swap it in now, but I don't want to have to rework the pinion angle after the lift. That's why I'm borrowing a pair of axles instead of getting replacements.

Stupid question....can you just slap in a set of spider gears?

I probably could if I had a set, the R/P looked ok although the gear oil was full of metal so no telling what the bearings look like.

But I've already got the rears pulled before the temp started plummeting. I hope to have it back together tomorrow.
