I am in the process of redoing the RMS on my new (99) 4.0 xj. I noticed that there is a half ring type thing that went around the crankshaft part between the rear most two bolts.
When I did the same job on my old (89) 4.0 xj, it did not have this piece. When I was doing that RMS job, I had to get a new oil pan because I bent the lip on the one that came off. The new oil pan came off of a 2000 XJ from junk yard and that one did not have this piece either.
Is this part essential for sealing the oil pan back to the engine block? I didn't have any leaks when I finished my old RMS job (which I also used a new style one piece gasket. Also does anyone know which direction this piece goes back on? I wasn't really paying attention when I took it off.
Thanks in advance.
