Of interest to veterans

I got to visit Arlington for the first time this past Memorial Day when I rode the Run For The Wall ride from California to DC.
The one thing that impressed me the most was the Tomb and the guards. You can tell that they are proud of their duty. One evening at dinner a young solider came up to my son and I and proceeded to talk with us. He was from the 3rd inf and was working real hard to be a tomb guard. He told us that their is 6 months of training before you become a guard. He was a rifleman in the honor guard at the time for the president and he wanted more than anything to be the tomb guard.
I can believe the dedication that these young men and women will have in this type of duty.
I hope alot more will see this and understand a little more of what it means to serve your country. This is a fine example of the pride one feels as a Veteran.
Thanks Eagle for sharing that

Thanks! Good stuff.

I spent much of today in the Seattle VA hospital. One of the things I like, aside from the medical care I get, is the chance to hear the old timers tell stories from the past.
My wait for my prescritions was 2.5 hours. Got to hear some good stuff from Korea, and guys talking about Nam. Funny thing was, what usually got the guys going was people bitching about the rain.
Sad to see some of the guys that you know cannot be long for this world.... but they are getting cared for. The Seattle VA is probably one of the best experiences I have had at the hospitals. And they give GOOD Meds too.

Eagle, thanks for posting. When I joined my intention was to do one enlistment and take that skill to the civilian market. I can't believe I'm still in and nearing retirement. :) What a wonderful journey it's been.

For all of us who have served, in whatever capacity that may be, the association we have with our brothers-in-arms while defending the principles upon which this country is based is almost indescribable and cannot be experienced in any other way than by serving honorably in our military.

The VA really needs to work on the waiting times in there hospitals. My dad goes to the VA hospital in Portland and it takes him all day for an appt. and to get medicine. When i was in Las Vegas the base shared with the VA hospital and i thought it was pretty bad when you would walk by the pharmacy while going to your appt. and see Veterans sitting there and then go to the pharmacy after your appt and get your medicine before they do. I really think they need to work on that.

You're right, they do need to work on it. When I first entered service I never, ever saw the problems we see today. It's sad, and it's something I suppose I have to look forward to in the near future.
