For any of you that followed the thread, or joined us last year on the many runs that we did to Nobleboro, NY 4x4 trails, I am sorry to inform you that NYS has officially closed these ATV/ 4x4 trails. According to the Ranger, he stated that a bunch of New York City people bought the land that borders the state land, and filed a petition with the state to not allow nuisance vehicles to use this land, and they won. The sad thing is that the ranger, a fellow jeeper, has to enforce rules that he does not agree with. He said that the only way to get these trails back is to get political. It's sad to see yet another piece of public land be taken.

Jeeze, "nusiance vehicles" huh? it will be interesting to see how this plays out, do you have details about the lawsuit, when that occurred, or where?or who the parties were that sued?

Add another closed trail to the list. Are there any clubs/organizatons around us looking out for land use issues in New York State?

No the ranger did not go into specific details about the law suit, but it sounds like it was mostly aimed at the ATV's that go ripping through there with their loud pipes and high speeds. The sign on the trail now says only ATV's with a pass are allowed down the trail, and I assume that they are only allowed to use the road to get to there hunting camps and the like. I'm going to look into the Town on Webb info and see if I can find anything about the closing in more detail.

Unfortunately, the ATVers are causing a lot of problems for us. This is exactly what led to the closing of the one legal trail we had in RI. Even after several 4x4 clubs got together last year in a massive cleanup effort that generated a lot of local good will for us, the trail was closed this year. The primary reason was that the quad riders couldn't make themselves stay on or even near the trail, and went ripping off through the bordering woods onto private property.

I know we're supposed to all be working together to protect and preserve access for off-highway vehicles of all kinds, but it does get to where you think it's time to declare open season on ATV riders. Sad commentary on human nature that they are so disrespectful of other people's rights and property.

The misuse of the trail by ATV riders does not surprise me at all, sorry to say, knowing the damage they do around me, including my dumbassed neighbor crossing my back yard... :mad: .(they dont wear helmets so I may get lucky.....) and seeing the damage they did up in ma on notch road (I'm sure that is just a drop in the bucket) a serious thwack in the head for the morons within their ranks may be required. Steele, if there's something I can do to help you get info or put something together, let me know.

ATV:OHV::PWC:Boat

Same mentality and availability to untrained users.

Yep, that's the way it sounded.... the ranger stated that the ATV's were going out of the bounds of the state trails onto private property. And apparently did some vandilism to some of the seasonal camps up there. I'm going to look into this a little further, they still allow camping up there but what's the point if you can't hit the trails. The ranger suggested that we look into joining up with the ATV'ers and the snowmobile clubs in the area and see if we as a combined group can make an impact. But because this is within the blue line of the adirondack state forest, our efforts probally won't get us very far. Its just a shame because this was a very nice place to get away from everything, literally 30 miles in the middle of no where, down some rock garden trails.

Has this situation been brought to the attention of United 4WD Association? NAXJA is a member of UNited, and they have a land use committee, complete with an attorney. Dunno how much they can or would do, but I think they should be informed, anyway.

Best contact would probably be their attorney, whose name is Carla something -- Bouchard, maybe? Who has a copy of the United newsletter handy?
