NP 242 Rebuild

Hello All. I am in the process of rebuilding my transfer case. This is a NP 242 from an 89 XJ. All is going well, so far, except for those snap rings from hell. They do not have the holes in the ends, and my pliers keep slipping off. Anyway, my question is this: Can I remove the bearings with a dowel rod and a hammer, or should I have them professionally removed/installed? I know some people use a socket that fits the outer ring of the bearing, but I don't think I will be able to find one that big. When I took it apart, all of the RTV from the inside seal had been sucked into the screen on the oil pump. I am guessing this caused a lack of proper lubrication, and this is why I have to tear it apart. I would be very appreciative of any pointers or tips from those who have done this before. BTW, I have the complete re-build kit with the chain, bearings, seals and spacers.

I found that the snap rings are not too bad IF you have the right tool. I had to buy 3 different snap ring pliers before I found a pair that worked right for that type of ring. It's been quite a while, but I think that I found the pair that worked at Sears. The style of the end has a tab that sticks out with ridges on it to better grip the snap ring. Once I got it open a bit, I stuck a two small screwdrivers under the ring so it would stay open and then I could get a better bite with the pliers.

You know, I was just at Sears last night, and I looked at those. Didn't really think about it grabbing better. Thanks, I will keep that in mind.

I am no hot shot mechanic by any stretch but I do enjoy fixing things myself if I have a book and/or some guidance. Rebuilding a transfer case...is that something an ordinary person can do if he has the right tools? Or is it just as tricky as rebuilding a transmission or differential?

I have a curious nature so I will tear anything apart and fix it...unless I know I am way over my head and skill level!

Good luck on the rebuild.

From what I have experienced, anyone with decent mechanical ability and the right tools could rebuild one. As you know, I am half way through my first time, and things are going well. The only hesitation I have is with the bearings. Everything else has been easy, so far. I would like to do it all myself, but I would hate to go through all of this work and fawk up a new bearing or the case.
