Right now I am just getting it restored. After I got the hood straightened out from a tree falling on it (previous owner) I had to remold the hood, I had to reweld/fab the passenger side front fender so it wouldn’t rub on the tire and I had too many, many spot welds, cracks, rust removal, and new sections to weld in to count. After that, I threw a dozen coats of paint on it. Next came redoing and replacing the stock steering. It was shot and I couldn’t steer the thing. Then came the problem of not having brakes. So a complete rebuild plus booster. I then came across a good trade for lift springs for my stockers and I also traded my stock wheels and tires for the 33s and wheels. I am working on the electrical right now. Not a dang thing worked and now I have it all going except the turn signals. No power to the column but I think I have it figured out.

After that I am going to tear apart the interior. Have nice new Civc seats to put in and thn paint and repair the inside and get everything looking pretty. I need to install a tach and a volt meter.

For the drive train, I need to put a new clutch in and repair my rear main, install a Detroit in the rear and put some Pro Comp reservoir shocks on the 4 corners and some 35” MTRs all around and power steering.

Oh yeah, I got the winch working and restored while I was at it 

Seems like all Dan's rigs are painted like his beer cooler!

Look who's talking. I thought you had a birth defect the first time I met you and all the other times I saw you because you always have this thing growing out of your hand. After closer inspection, I realized it was a beer can and not a defect, your just a derelict.

When we getting together? I know I want to make a quick trip to Frank Raines and see how the rig does after the 12th of November.

Try to make B.C.s run to Hollister on the 5th!

My wife leaves me for a month as she goes with the kids back home, so I hope to be out or under my rig everyweekend for that month.

I love how you have changed 3 rigs but the coller is still the same!

Any photos of the XJ with the coller? hasta

Nope. Cooler was put inside XJ. My registration does not become valid until the 12th of November so no driving around. I did the paperwork at the begining of this month and it would have cost me double to run it now since I would have to pay for two years instead of one.

Now to make a cooler mount on the 40. Hows the kids?

Nice Yota Dan. I bought a burgandy red XJ from you as well. You sure love that color!!! Are you sure you didn't paint it before I got it from you? Good job on the paint job.

My Durabak exterior is looking like crap and I'm going to probably sand it or whatever is necessary to strip it off and paint it a nice bright shade of red, Rustoleum Safety Red from Lowe's :laugh3: It's the spray paint they use to mark stuff like the florscent yellow. How many cans of paint and primer did you need and how many coats? I hope that mine turns out 1/2 as good as yours.

For the cruiser, I had 70 cans of paint.(someting like 5 primer runs and 5/ top coat runs) for an XJ about 30. I went with the WalMart 99 cent cans since the cruiser will get a pro paint job in a few years after I am done cutting for rockers and stuff. The only reason I painted it was to fix the body and rust damage. I had to weld in sections and also use bondo (for the hood mostly since I had to happer it out). Have fun.

But I don't think that paint you want to use will turn out really well. It isn't made for detail stuff, jsut marking the gorund. (I think).

You put on 5 coats of primer and 5 color/top coats? Any clear coats on top of all that? You used 70 cans total for the Cruiser and you think 30 cans total for a XJ? Just checking. Did you do the paint job in your driveway? It turned out really good, better than I though for a rattle can job. Here's what I was planning on using:

can size:
http://www.cornerhardware.com/productdisplay.pl?item_id=261064&cid=46464

gallon size:
http://www.cornerhardware.com/productdisplay.pl?item_id=271022&cid=46464

Would you suggest the gallon and just getting a spray gun and compressor? I have the compressor, not the spray gun yet. I read on a vehicle paint thread on Pirate that there are strict laws to spraying a vehicle outside like $20K or so. I was just trying to determine whether I could do this job in my garage or if I need to set up a paint booth or something to???

Sorry, I wasn't trying to hyjack your Cruiser thread, just trying to ask some questions on the good paint job you did. :)

I did not put on clear coat as this is only a temp paint job for a few years. The body is beyond full restoration and it will be a trail rig so it is what it is. I will do a 500 dollar job with my own spray gun and make my own booth when we buy that nice little place out in the country and I get my shop set up.

I didn't do the same type of paint job on the cruiser as I did the XJ. I just roughed up the XJ and started spraying without much prep. I did both in the garage with the garage door opened up about 2 inches and the back door opened with 2 box fans stacked on each other blowing out. You would have to clean out your garage to do it, but the fumes might kill your neighbors. Mine complained about it accross the court in the evening with their screen door open. If you aren't gong for too much detail, go out in the country and spray away. If you are going to use a compressor, you will have to make sure you get the correct solvents to thin the paint, and it requires much more time and you will need to make a paint booth. Thing about a rattle can is it dries fast and less particles get into it. If you use a spray gun, it will take a while. You will need a constant 80 degrees or so for it to cure. Each has its positives, just ask yourself what is the outcome you want? For me, I only painted b/c of the body work and I do not like rigs with patch jobs showing and primer her and there.

Thanks for all the info Dan. I think I'll just keep it simple and use rattle cans. Did you by any chance see bright red spray paint at Wal Mart? The Rustoleum I saw at Lowe's comes in 15 oz bottles, but is like $5-7/ea so if I could get some $.99 bottles I think I could even be a little less picky, although I really want Bright Red paint. I might even just touch up the Durabak that's on my Jeep like sanding it, adding more where it scraped off etc and then shoot the body with a few coats of spray paint. All I know right now is that my Durabak is looking like crap, fading, and holding onto dirt/grease etc even if I use a scrub brush and try to get it off.

My bro is looking to use Dark Blue bed liner on his XJ with the granuals like Herculiner. I got the smooth Durabak, but I had problems with using some bad bondo that cured really fast in UV light (sunlight) with no curing agent and I couldn't get to it right away and had a mess trying to sand it down. I made the mistake of not preping it enough and putting the Durabak over it, because it was smooth and not rough, it looks bad......sorry for the novel. :)
