Hi,
I'm in the market for a 15-17' open-bow runabout.

I am looking for something 1995 or newer, with an inboard/outboard at least 85 HP, and in the $5K range at max.

I am not looking for a project. It should be turn-key and mechanically sound.

Something like this is exactly what I am looking for:
2002 17ft sea ray 176 - $4995
17ft SEA RAY 176 2002 Open bow, 3.0 mercruiser with 72 hours, bimini top, cover and single custom trailer with swing away tongue $4,995.00

(I just missed out buying it, but I am on the list if the deal falls through.)

If you have something you're thinking about selling, let me know.

Mike

Mine's an older boat but it's in much better condition than a LOT of the newer boats. It's an '80 Glastron open bow, and it looks stellar. $2100 out the door.

why would you want an i/o? outboard or inboard FTW. I have a good boat repair guy if you want someone to talk to about it. He may even have a line on a boat.

Why is that?

I want a 4-stroke in case I still have it when I move to Lake Tahoe. (No 2-strokes allowed.)

I don't know a whole lot about boats. I've had a handful of jet skis over the years, and I know I don't want a jet boat... I don't see a lot of inboards or 4-stroke outboards.

So, I kind of defaulted to i/o.

unless you're getting something with a 20hp motor or smaller, it will probably be a 4 stroke. i/o's require more upkeep.

That is a sexy boat Skwerl. If I have some cash laying around come summertime I might just call you.

Why no jet boat? I love my SeaDoo Challenger 180. Seats 8. No prop or bellows or water impeller or any of that crap to deal with.

These are the reasons in no particular order, and they may be complete BS. Like I have said, I am boating newbie outside jetskis...

But my understand about Jet Boats:
1 - Less efficient.
2 - Noisier.
3 - less "power at the prop" for same sized engine.
4 - harder on driver when towing skiers/wakeboarders since low draft, allows skiers/wakebnoards to "pull boat off line".
5 - I've had to jump off my jet skis and clear debris out of the intake grating WAY too many times in the kelp beds. I sure as shit don't want to have to jump and swim under a full sized runabout and do the same.
6 - Most I've seen are 2-stroke... although I know the industry is moving toward 4-stroke... I don't want to drop the coin on a newer model.

Ok... how much of that is complete BS?? :D

Mine is four stroke, but it cost a few bucks.

Your newbie reasons are all actually good. I got stuck in the La Jolla kelp beds once. Took me a while to get out. For the Colorado River trips I take, I love it.

This is my third boat.

Make sure the transom doesnt leak, Make sure you get enough power.

My last boat was an old 17 foot chaparral with an IO.

Ther is no such thing as a cheap boat. Don't let that stop you. They are fun!
