NJ Inspection - emissions only

Don't know if anybody else has been following this but apparently NJ is planning to do away with standard vehicle inspection as early as July 2010 - the only thing that must pass is emissions. I would imagine that this would apply to NJ lift laws and tilt inspections as well.

Just an FYI

I would also assume it applies to the high rise. I would think that would be the first thing to go actually. This is a plus for me as my inspection is up in June.

From what I can gather, only 5 to 6% of vehicles are failing inspection for mechanical issues so it's not cost effective to keep the inspection stations open. Emissions, however, is a federally mandated standard so that would obviously stay in place.

The State of NJ would have to prorate or buy out the contract with Parsons which is the company that staffs the inspection stations.

My inspection is up in July, perfect timing but I should have passed without any major issues anyway.

since I went with the highrise last time around to stay 100% "legit", and it turned out to be a royal pain in the a** (4 days off of work total), this would be welcome news, as mine is up in July. Somehow I doubt this will come to pass, though, as NJ is as close to a police state as you can get outside of our west coast clone, California.

If this passes, it'd be sweet to drive my XJ around again.
