Hey everyone, my name is Sean and I live in greeley colorado! I just bought this 88 cherokee for 900 bucks as my winter dd

got it cause I always wanted a jeep since I was a kid and this isn't fun in the snow....

anyways I love it! I think its a steal for the money. I don't know a thing about 4x4s so I'm here to learn a lot ...I'm decently mechanically inclined...however I've always been into just going fast(hince my baby..the goat)....I've only recently been enjoying the pleausres of four wheel drive....



anyways I noticed that there was coolant leaking from the thermostat housing.... so I figured I'd just need to swap out the gasket....

so I took it apart to find no thermostat :moon:....and while taking off the nut on the bottom stud...the stud came out!!! wtf!!...anyways when I tried to screw the stud back in it would only go a little ways then just spin in the same place..
after this I decided I'd try a bolt...once the bolt got any tension it would start to spin in the same place...anways....any ideas on how to fix this??? anyone in greeley willing to help me would be greatly appreciated..plus I'd like to meet some jeeps peeps...anyways any suggestions help

Welcome to the XJ side! Looks like a nice little project rig!

I think I've seen you over on LS1GTO.com - I'm 93heep and have a black '04 with an '05 hood and spoiler delete (not shown in pic)... :thumbup:

As far as fixing your t-stat....... kinda sounds like you have stripped threads. My first suggestion would be to get a tap the same size as the stud you removed and clean out the hole and see if you can grab any threads maybe a bit farther down. I'm thinking that you probably won't though.

The next step would be to do one of 2 things: Tap it out to the next size up and replace with a new bolt to match, or get a Helicoil kit and insert a new thread coil.

Either way, doesn't sound like much fun....... sorry.

Great...............this place was bad enough with all the Audistic people now we have a bunch of "Goat heads" hanging out now :D

I personally have a soft spot for old metal.

My uncle had a GTO I was trying to buy off of him..................a '66 that is. He got a better offer and I was only 18 at the time and could not match the offer. He is not very much about keeping it in the family, all about the dollar.

It looked like this, but with a metallic maroon...........

So I bought a '67 Chevelle SS all black......looked comparable to this;

....almost had it finished. All it needed was the interior to be re-done, but I decided to go be my true self and sold it. Bought my first Jeep '76 Cherokee chief..............wierd switch huh?

BTW threads around here rarely stay on subject for too long. They always spurt off to the right or left and then return. :D

Welcome aboard!

My preference runs to the thread inserts. It's more expensive, but keeps life simple when you need to replace parts later. Plus you get a new tool.
 
hey glacial and 93...I knew there would be other goat dudes here! haha. so...is there anyone in greeley who is willing to look at my jeep? and try to help me? in order to helicoil I'm either going to have to remove the head....or radiator....whats easier(assuming radiatior) ...is there anyone whose done it!

hey man. thanks! my brothers ladyfriend lives up there..really close. so what is easier on these..pulling off the head or the radiator and supports....I'm assuming the radiatior but I was taught to never assume...anyways..if so..have you ever pulled the radiator on your xj??
 
I have limited experience with the XJ, but I am going to say pull the radiator and the grill to get to the hole. That being said, I would likely do as Troy suggested; try a tap first.

Yeah, you shouldn't need to pull the head. I'd try removing the radiator and moving the AC condenser (if you have one) out of the way, then the grille and see if that gives you a straight shot at it. Otherwise, just go a few steps further and remove the rest of the header panel - only a few more screws and nuts.
