Ok so let me start by saying that I'm not posting this in the modified tech section because I need local help, and this isn't your normal modify question.

I'm working on a '41 Kaiser Willy's MB army jeep. It has been "modified" by a not so great restoration shop. They shoved in a Vortec V6, and then just started doing a horrible job of welding everything back in around the engine.

I have most of the clearance issues sorted out, now I need to redo the steering setup. The took the stock steering cut, twisted and welded it back in and its not safe. What I want to do is put in a new non power steering gearbox, and a basic y-link steering setup like the xj's and so many other models. I have been trolling all the different sites that I know of and the biggest problem I have is that all the steering setups are fixed length for certain models. I measured my xj steering and knuckle to knuckle is 49 inches, this willy's is only about 40 inches.

So this question of the day is who can I call that can help supply me with a manual steering box, and make me a custom length steering set?

Oh and the steering box needs to be mounted in front of the axle just like an xj, just not power assisted.

Also I have seen a couple of diy kits but they were using like 1.5 inch tube and that is just way too big for this project. I don't need anything bigger than maybe 1.25 at the most.

Thanks in advance for any input,

Asa

The early sa toyotas had a funky behind the axle steering set up, not sure on the suzuki. You need to figure out what tre you need to run that will fit your knuckle, or ream them to something common, buy all the parts, measure, twice, and take it all to a welder and have them weld it up? As for the steering box, it would save some work to try and match the pitman arm taper with your knuckle tre tapers, whatever those end up being? If you were closer I'd help you get started. Pics would probably help of the current set-up? Good luck.

Cool, I will look into some different boxes. I think for the links I may just order a cut to fit kit with heims all the way around. No worrying aboout tre tapers matching or which tre we used where and who is going to keep track. Heims are easy and readily available.

Thanks for the help guys, I will post a few pics next week when I'm back in the shop.

Any other suggestions critisisms or off handed remarks are still and always welcome!

Asa
