need portable generator help

I recently acquired a Devillbiss (sp?) 5000W generator that's missing a few pieces from the engine....guy was throwing it away, and I'm a packrat and couldn't let it just sit there. Anyways, does anyone perhaps have one that could take a pic or two for me to reference to rebuild it? It's a model GB5000, and it's missing the engine shroud, which the ON/OFF switch is supposedly bolted to. There's a clipped wire coming off the magneto that I'm assuming goes to it, and another two-wire connector hanging off the side that one of the wires comes from the oil cutoff switch on the side of the block also, that goes nowhere.
I googled and got some generic parts diagrams and the schematic for the generator, but nothing for the engine. It's a B&S 10 HP, horizontal shaft.
Any and all help is appreciated,
Jeff

Check out the B&S site, I've downloaded more than a few manuals from them.

I have an old one of those with the 220v connector and the 10hp B&S motor. The on/off switch is a metal tab hooked to the spark plug. Just push the tab over and it quits. It grounds the magneto so that the spark plug stops sparking. Thats all I got.

You are in luck that it is a Briggs. Simply to work on, easy to fix. Search for the engine info....not the generator.

Word up, Rev.

Here's a pic of the thing. Hell, even if I have to throw $100 in parts at it, it's worth it (to me)

Thanks fellas...I think I can put her back together, if not to OEM specs, at least enough to get it functioning again!

Sorry to drag up an old thread of mine, but I had to. After this thing sitting under my deck for over a year with a garbage bag over it, I decided to pull it out last weekend and start working on it. I sourced the shroud parts I needed from a local good 'ol boy for $25:spin1: and got them installed. Rigged up a temporary push/pull switch off the coil to ground to control it, and had to pull the generator off the engine 'cause the armature was binding up. Got all that mess lined back up/cleaned and put back together, then had to pull the tank off 'cause it had about a quart of water in it. Spent half an hour with a blowgun drying it out, replaced the petcock, and reinstalled it. Added about a quart of oil to it (case was about empty:nono: ), put some gas in it, flipped the switch and gave it a yank. Started on the 4th pull, and it purrs like a kitten.

I'm pulling it all apart tomorrow and repainting the frame, and cleaning the engine. The only thing I have to do is replace the isolators on it (the one under the gerset is ripped in half, and the two under the engine are not in much better shape). They have been ordered. I've got the rear of it hanging with a ratchet strap temporarily while I test run it....

Oh, and I have to make some kind of cart for it. Damn thing is too heavy to drag around!

Yay me!

(as I found it, 3 years ago and when I stashed it under the deck last year)
