Need a slip jointed driveshaft asap

The front driveshaft I was going to use to get my xj back on the road is too short, I need one that is at least 36" widway through the travel range.

Since the radiator in my saturn blew yesterday I am without a vehicle, help! Even if its just to borrow I have to be able to make it to work on Monday. Call or text me my number is on the first page of the socal recovery sticky in the main socal chapter forun for any of you that don't have it.

I mean a double cardan shaft, not the stock style slip yoke shaft. I put an sye on my 242 and the shaft I'm trying to use is too short

I don't know the length on my stock front shaft, I won't be home till tomorrow night. When I get home I will measure it and text you. Worse case you can use it to get by till you come up with something else.

Could always drve it to work fwd since you have sye. :)

I'm trying to avoid that, but its looking like that's what I'm going to be stuck with.

Let me clarify, since I just re-read my post from last night and I'm sober now :rof:

A stock front shaft is too short for the back with my setup, the front shaft will work with a 231 tcase, but not a 242 (I have a 242). The 242 case is physically much shorter end to end than the 231, so a stock front shaft bolted to the sye in the rear ends up being about 5 or 6 inches too short.

What I need really is to buy/borrow someone's spare double cardan rear driveshaft, because the driveline shops are all closed on sunday and I need to be able to get to work on monday.

The shaft I need has to be 36" minimum from yoke to yoke when it is about half way extended. I need it to be the yoke style mount at the tcase side, not the flange style.

thanks.

I have been looking for one too Mike. I need one for the front of the MJ. He stock ZJ shaft was too short with the 231. I have not been able to find one in any wlcehicle that length. There was a very rare Bronco in 78 that used that shaft. Sadly I think you are screwed and will have to have one lengthened to work.

possibly broaden your search? Maybe someone's got a spare transfer case and shaft laying around-- I'm a bit far, but if you were local, you'd be welcome to use my spares!

i got one that is 33 compressed, and i can make it expand to 36". im not sure if it will go any farther, there's a rubber boot on it that makes it difficult to measure alone since it keeps contracting.
it's a front shaft from an automatic 231 4.0L 94 zj

thanks Dan but it needs to be at 36" at ride height, it needs to be longer than that otherwise it won't extend. a stock front shaft just isn't going to work for me I was hoping someone had a spare custom one laying around I could borrow or buy. I'm just going to have to have something made up when i get paid this week.

thanks to those who replied.

you can make a longer one yourself if you find some tubing. i shortened mine myself and i had good luck. no vibrations at all even without a balance, but hose clamps will work to balance it if need be.
tack the tube in one spot at each end, bolt it in the jeep, throw a dial indicator on it (pretty cheap at harbor freight if you dont have one), get it running true, tack it in a few spots on each end, then lay a bead.
you can probably do it in a couple hours. gotta do what ya gotta do to get to work.

Mike -

I'll measure mine tonight. It's a Tom Wood's built for 5-6" of lift over stock. Only thing is I had it shortened an inch when I swapped on my 44. :dunno:

You're welcome to borrow it until you get a new one so that you can get rolling, I don't drive my junk much.
