MS server 2003

Just finished my first install of a 2003 server. It took all drivers from win2k and xp devices but did not know how to handle the intel 10/100/1000 onboard nics. Also took the SMC drivers for the barricade router for printing. It even handled the new Nvidia FX video card. Still too 'circus' looking for my taste though, must be a classic setting somewhere. Now to go and see what kind of holes it has from my inquisitive linux box :D Think I'll stick the portal server in tonight and maybe the map point server too... Plus I want to see if it will crunch seti work units and still run.

Mr Linux, Win 03?????????

It's no fair that you get to play with big toy's all day and get paid for it.

The most fun I get to have is telnetting into our AIX servers. For some reason the Admins trust I won't do anything I shouldn't.

Which Linux you running? Red Hat or Mandrake....or other? Also how do you like linux? Ive always wanted to try Red Hat out, but never wanted to take the time to learn.....

I do ALL the OS's on ALL the platforms, my main 'thing' is designing working harware platforms from current and bleeding edge technology according to what the customers need, or think they need, with enough head room so they don't max out their stuff in 6 months to a year.
The main reason I'm playing/learning 03, in addtion to the 'know as much as possible', is that I get a special deal from microsoft, it's called 'map' or microsoft action pack, being a systems builder I get ALL the microsoft fully functional business applications for $299, they are all NFR or Not for resale, all their servers, business applications and alot of good microsoft training and monthly update cd's of service packs and such. I'm also a member of the national association of systems builders and get alot of good stuff from them. I just got a full Intel server that included 2 2.4gb Xenon cpu's, dual processor motherboard with dual gb ethernet, raid, scsi, memory, Intel server case, power supply, win2k advanced server w/10 cal, all for $800.
As for linux, I run, sell and install systens with Mandrake, I like the fact that I can install, configure and have online a running DNS server or servers in under 20 minutes from scratch [depends on how fast you can type and add hosts]. The red hat installer never impressed me, like sco, it's overly complicated which may be good for job security but takes too long get up and running for me, plus mandrake has a full admin book ready to go with each new relsease.
I've never [knock on wood :D] had a mandrake install go bad. I have also been doing mandrake for home users lately, don't have to worry about viruses and such plus it keeps their kids downloading games and such and filling up hard drives to a minumum :D
Open office works fine with MS office files so they are happy.
I cut my teeth on AIX back in 90 at bellcore when IBM's RT's came out later to become RS6000's

The Computational Chemistry folks have 4 HP J class dual processor 800mHz PA-RISC machines for running batch jobs. Each system can run 2 instances of SETI and complete work units in under 2 hours.

That they don't run Windoze is gravy......

For Linux, I run SuSE 8.2 Pro and have been since 5.something-or-other.

Work stuff is HP-UX 10 and 11, SGI Irix 6.5.x, and Solaris [789].

My old DEC Alpha runs SETI work units in about 4 hrs. That's its only job besides occasionally compiling X. It does that in less than an hour.

I certainly don't want to start a distro discussion, gawd knows there are enough of those... that being said, I use slack because I like to get up close and personal with the viscera of the os and its components.

Work stuff runs the gamut of all windoze plus linux, solaris and aix.
