Moving to Monterey this Summer

Hey yall I will be "transferring" from the Southeast Chapter this summer to Monterey If everything continues as planned. I have been a part of NAXJA since 2008(?) Including a term as SEC President. I'm interested to see who is around that area as well as what there is to do with the Jeep. Also if anyone has knowledge on local fly fishing I'm all ears, the fly shop in Carmel will be one of my first stops when I get there. Oh, I'll be bringing my MJ that will be stroked, geared and locked by that time. I've moved away from my crawler focused XJ and transitioned into more of a do-all expo-ish rig.

Monterey is an awesome area.

Welcome to the Sierra chapter. I'm here in Monterey county as well.

Not real familiar with the fishing opportunities in Monterrey, other than being popular for saltwater fishing, but if you're willing to travel east a couple hours there's tons of options. I've got a few jeep/kayak/fishing trips in the works.

Thanks yall! I'm looking forward to exploring the area.

I'm looking into the whole surf fly fishing niche, it looks like something that will be fun to learn. I'm definitely up for heading into the hills during the weekends when I can, that's more of my style anyways. Where/what are you targeting on those trips?

Welcome to the bay!!
I live in Santa Cruz. And often fish San Lorenzo river here For steelhead.
I ocean fish mostly. And have a commercial license for halibut sea bass and ling/rock cod.
here's a 55lb white sea bass from last year :)

That's a monster! I am looking forward to steelhead, that's a bucket list fish on the fly. The best trips to me combine driving in off pavement and setting up camp next to or around the fishing. I was also spoiled living in Boone, NC where I could get 10 minutes away from work and jump into the river in the evenings.

If you're all done moving in by august we've got a forum event planned to go to Swamp Lake in the sierras around then, wheeling and fishing is the plan.

Looks like a great trip planned. I know I will only be able to make it there Friday/Saturday if at all, which I won't find out until June-ish. I may be limited to spontaneous day trips for awhile until I'm fully settled.

Past 2 years or so most of my fishing has been done off my kayak going after a variety of trout species. I spend a good amount of time going after bass, and really getting into stripers and salmon more recently. It's exciting getting towed around lol.

Small update. Officially a resident of Monterey now. I'm liking the weather so far, it's a good reprieve from the punishing Arizona sun I was in. Purchased a tow pig, but I won't have the Jeep out here until probably January.
