motor transplants

i used my original cross member it is an 88 i think all of the cross members are the same 87-01-most aftermarket set ups that use a different crossmember for suspension arms cover all years.how did u modify your brackets in stead of the bosses on the block-did u reweld something or just cut and space . my 88 brackets are diff than 91 up brackets i believe.

I have two cross members, my '88 and a '91 or '92. They are different. The '92 is sunken were the tranny mount is at. I think the original '88 cross member is the way to go and drill some holes in it. I'll cross reference the tranny mounts between the TJ and XJ.
On the motor mount brackets, I had to cut off, reposition and weld one of the ears. I think it was the drivers side. The other side, I made a spacer. I felt it was a better option, than risking messing up the block. I also try and modify the least expensive or easiest replaced part. I have an '88 engine, a '95 engine, a 2000 short block and the '03 engine. The motor mounts from the '88 fit the '95 and '00 blocks. I did run into someone who had problems with a newer block not fitting a YJ or TJ. I think it was 2000 block out of a Cherokee. I didn't get details, so I can't say what the problem was. I bought the '95 block off of him. I used the head off that engine for the motor in the '88. I do have the motor mount brackets off the 2000 motor. They are virtually the same as the '88 motor mount brackets.

Edit: The motor mount brackets are cast steel and not cast iron. The are suppose to weld fairly easy. I had a local shop do the welding. I think it was $30-40. The 2000 brack has an elongagted slot on one of them, where as the '88 just had a hole.

ok what i did was too use a spacer on the pass side as you had but on the drivers side i cut one of the bosses back and just finished tapping the block to the end of the hole.of course if u are not ok about drilling and tapping then that was a good choise for u as to not screw up the block.i am an ase master tech and have been working on cars for 18 + years now so d&t for me was much easier and with carefull measuring and tapping u wont have a problem same as measuring and cutting back the bosses .i did d&t the boss for my 88 water pump as well so now if i change it some day any year xj pump will do.and for the alt bracket i drilled the bosses for the mount all the way thruogh and used some spacers as well to clear the t chain cover.so far so good havent installed it yet like i said i need the exhaust pipe to come in to make it much easier to put the pipe in with no engine there.plus i cant go to work until monday due to the hurricane that hit us yesterday--i live in south fla.my work is in hollywood fla near miami dade county.sooo i wait till monday!!!!my jeep is at work inside the shop.all safe and sound.........i hope

Sorry to here about the hurricanes. I'm in Indiana, so they usually just send just some rain. Which the last one it was welcomed. I was a machinist for 10 years, so drilling and tapping is OK with me. Still, I'd rather mess up and engine bracket than the block. Either way. I'm kind of glad to hear someone else having to modify an '03 block. I have posted about this on this board and other Jeep boards and I wonder if people thought I was wacked. I put the '03 water pump back on. I am going to use '00 Cherokee brackets. I'll have to see how things fit up though. I am using the '00 intake manifold and Ford type Bosch injectors. I still have to one header bolt to get in and put in the distributor. Actually bunch of stuff. Only if I could find some time to work on it. Did you have to relocate your cross member back? I was told by someone else they had to. It sounded like you did too. I mocked up the install and it looked like I wouldn't have to.

What year 4.0L motors can I put into my 88 cherokee...thanks.

Too bad you're not

(A) Closer to me, I live in Manchester, NH bu my folks live in Plymouth, NC

or

(B) It's not closer to October. I am driving down there for a vacation.

I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee that I would give you the motor out of. I have some stuff I have sold off of it, and some stuff I wanted to keep for my 1993 Cherokee, but after that, it's all going to the bone yard. The motor, tranny, and all are still all in tack..

I would give it to you for no cost just to make this thing go away.

Anyone else local looking for a motor?

Jamie

While the cam didn't change lift or angles, it did get retarded to cut NOx levels since the HO has no EGR.

Too bad he's not close to Seattle. I have 2 buildable 4.0L bottom ends for $25 each.

yeah it is funny that i even made a post on this web forum and i got a reply from a moderator that answered, the answer was"no,no and no hope this helps" but guess what the answer in fact is "yes, yes, and f^{< yeah!" so i see that some people realy have no clue as to helping some one that in fact has the same year jeep as i do some day will get a smart a$$ answer to there question and although they wont know when or where but they will know y. think of vonage commercials.
