For Army and ex-Army types: Does anyone know what an "Army L target is? Rhode Island requires a score of not less than 195 on an Army L target for a handgun permit, and my friendly local NRA instructior doesn't know what the target is.
Well I dont know but when my Dad worked at NSA he had to qualify with his 9mm and he shot a 294/300. I dont know what an "L" target is but I think most are sillouttes
The Army "L" Target has a 5" bull and is used at 25 yards. It is apparently a qualifying target and is listed as an "NRA OFficial" target at www.pistoleer.com. It is printed on 28"x28" heavy target stock.
It is close enough to the NRA Centrefire Pistol 25-yard target you should have no real trouble with it...
Considering I taught small arms and have all the manuals here for it, I spent the last 20 min going thru the manuals and could find no reference to an 'L' target. The only target I remember using was a standard silhoutte, size depending on distance shot from, 25meter or 50 meter.

You are forgiven - I guess this is a newer target, as I don't remember qualifying on it in the early 90's. Then, we used some sort of modified "head & shoulders" silhouette target, sized to an effective 100m at a true distance of 25m (it was an Air Farce thing...)
Of course, what sort of weapons man would I be if I didn't find a simple answer like that in the space of a couple minutes? It is merely a matter of knowing where to look...

So at that scale, your M9 was (finally) throwing out an effective round? 9mm --> 36mm!! That's even better than the A-10s main gun I'll leave any other comments out for now
I wouldn't know - I still used the M1911A1 (and still do - I just don't like Berettas, and I think the 9mm Para round is a waste of perfectly good lead that can be used for a .45 bullet!) Just because I qualified with a paperweight doesn't mean I want to depend on one for my life...
last night i was flipping channels and Rambo was on.
what is the model of truck he stole at the ending? i know that it is a 50s GMC with inline 6 and auto trans.

Hahahaha....
I think someone finally got the meaning, dude!
FWIW, the 300 score that was the target for the NSA is called a GSA qualification. I scored the minimum acceptable score the last time I qualified while serving in capacity as an Executive Protection agent for my former employer ... 299. That was back in 1994.
Any less and you were required to go back to the range and practice for a month. If you still couldn't muster the 299, you were looking for a new job by the time your qualification was over.
i got laughed at when i qualified for my concealed weapons permit with my colt python .357. the guy thought i was gonna use that for my carry. durr...i bought a sub-compact .357 sig for that.

********, was that when you were personal assist to one of the presidents? I know you personally knew Nixon and Reagan..... Do you still go over to Bush Sr's house for fireside chats? :laugh2::laugh2::laugh2:

RI requires 30 shots in 30 minutes at 25 yards. That makes 300 the MAXIMUM possible score. Were your criteria different, or are you telling me that the minimum acceptable score is 29 out of 30 in the back, and one "flyer" all the way out in the 9 ring? I think I'd have to practice for more than a month to make that.

Now to complicate things a little, the middle two volleys of 5 shots are fired from a blind position (protected crouch) from the left of the protecting wall, quick reload (or 5 second pause for you autos) and then another volley from the right of the blind. And ....just to boggle....The third volley of five is fired at 35 yds.....
It's been around 8 years since I had to qualify....
I don't know if I could even do it now...
Jusy for giggles, and because we now have the acreage to do it....I pulled one of my old targets and placed it on a plywood backing and placed it out at 100 yds. I used a .22 long rifle... no scope. I didn't do badly. All my lead was inside of the 8 ring.
