I am moving from SoCal to the DC metro area. I can live in either MD or VA (no way would I live in the District). I read a couple posts about guys getting ticketed in MD for larger than stock tires and lifts.

Is this for real or just a Carrol County thing? Not asking for opinion or "I heard some one say" info. I need to know the facts here. Does the peoples republic of Maryland have laws against lifts and larger than stock tires?

I dont think Va has any such laws but if someone knows for a fact that VA does or does not I would sure like to know.

Thanks

John

Look here for the Va. lift law www.va4wda.org Your XJ is a passenger vehicle in Va,not a truck. 22" bumper limit.Inspection shops really don,t care how tall you are but the cops do! If you arn,t being an A$$ then they tend to overlook your lift.

Wayne,

I really appreciate the information and the reference to the legal language. Looks like I will be getting the welder out pretty quick when I arrive to make some drop brackets for the bumpers. I measure out at 25" front and 28" rear with no load (spare, hi-lift, spares kit only). It will be an interesting task on the rear since I use a modified stock swing out tire carrier. Probably have to lower the latch assembly where it ties into the bumper.

I guess this is a common problem in Virginia. I will search for existing solutions (beyond roll the dice with the police) but if some one has a couple reccomendations on how this has been done in the past without killing hte approach angle I am open to them.

I got my xj registered as an SUV in VA. Plenty of XJ's running around over that limit. Very few have gotten tickets. I think at your height you won't have too many problems.

Oh and if you drop the bumpers they will measure from the "framerail"*L*

We have al kinds of big lift stuff in Roanoke, way over the limit! If you behave, I don't think most of the cops really care. Too much paperwork, and they have way too much other stuff to take care of anyway. If you stay off peoples a**, and don't rear end someone you'll be O.K..

I also live in VA and have never had a problem with 6.5 inches and 32's. Im going to 35's shortly and Im not worried at all about the cops. But that could be because I am one. hehe

But really, everyone else is right, dont be an ass and you will be fine in VA.

Thanks for all the info. I will leave it alone and see how it goes. I drive pretty conservatively so other than the lift and rock damage (all nicely painted over) I shouldnt stand out to much when I am forced to drive it on the road.
