Looking at buying an xj, my first jeep

Hello everyone I live in BV. I am considering buying my first jeep, a XJ here locally, it is a 1990, 4.0, auto tranny, 3.5" lift, otherwise pretty much stock! Oh yes approx. 240,000 miles. I am not concerned about mileage as it won't be my DD. I would hope to eventually build it up enough to run such trails as, OCG, HC and other trails rated as difficult. I have done most of these trails in a K5 so I am familiar with them. By the way the run up Halfmoon Creek is realatively easy after you cross the creek, a problem with high water in the spring. Spectacular views along the way. The old mill is very interesting, I about wore out my camera on this trip.
Would please give me some hints on things to look for? I drove it on a FS road and the 4 wheel drive seemed to work fine. Is it common for the valve cover gasket to leak? ANY and ALL information would be appreciated, Thank you!
Fred

Welcome. There're quite a few oddities to these Jeeps, valve cover gasket being among them. I suggest you try the search button, it will answer many of your questions.

My '91 4.0L has 160,000 and has been bulletproof to this point. Doesn't even leak oil. My auto trany is the one with the Power/Comfort mode (I keep it in Power) and I have heard this is a good thing. I have had no troubles. For the money an XJ is very capable. I tick the CJ/YJ guys off all the time as they hope I can't keep up with them. The longer wheelbase comes in handy sometimes, and body armor protects it for the other times. I was a beginner when I bought mine but they are very builder friendly. Parts are becoming much easier to find. My XJ experience has been great. Good luck on your search.

Thanks. I look forward to figuring this FORUM thing out and chatting as well as hookin' up with some bad XJ's for some Colorado trail rides and other events. Keep me in the loop. Later.
