Hey, as most of you guys know, im schoolin' down here in Whittier (College). Well i've been working on getting the interior of my jeep prepped to be trail lined on the interior. Well come to find I *might* have to cut out some floorboard and put some new sheetmetal in there. The floorboard has a pretty bad rust spot, and im going to see if I cant prevent it from needing to be cut out. I was wondering if I do have to cut it out, could someone here just weld the sheetmetal in place for me? Its not a big area, less than 1'x1'. Also, if someone happens to have an air compressor I could possibly borrow, use, or tell me where I could I would REALLY appreciate it. Sorry to sound so needy, its just living here in College I dont have access to the stuff I did at home. Heck im running an extension cord out someones dorm window to the parking lot so I can use my power drill and wire brush. Ahhh college life. Thanks.

You'll more than likely end up cutting it, rust doesn't like to stop. If this is just surface rust, sand it down and spray it with Rustolem-that'll help prevent it from gettin worse. Otherwise... cut it.

Home depot has a rust stopper that acts like a primer but I cant remember the name. I used it and its worked for 4 years now, I also put a piece of sheet aluminum rivited in place over the hole I had in my floorboard on my blazer

If you need an AC you can use mine here in Fullerton. I'm not to far from where we had the MnG.

If you can wait until Mid October I can help you with the compressor stuff.

Tell me, where are your floorboard problems?
Just found one of my 88 XJ's completely rusted through over the muffler, no where else.
Guess the heat accellerated the oxidation there.
12" x 18" I had to cut out to get back to cancer free metal.
How did I know? The smoke coming from the carpet was my first clue!

On my driver's side, the rudt is more of a problem more towards the petals. On my passengers side it is more profound in the upper left corner. Im going to go at it with a wirewheel and sandpaper and see if that can't makie it any better. If not Im not going to take any chances and Ill cut it out and have somebody weld it up, which isnt a biggie.

Alright, well looks like it was worse than I thought it would be while trying to clean up the interior flooring...[bedlining it]. While trying to scrape the rust off the passenger's side floorboard I went right THROUGH it. So it looks like I will be cutting out some floorboard and having some sheetmetal or whatever welded in place. For those who have had this happen, what thickness did ya go for the flooring? Any advice on how to go about it?

I love cars that have lived in California their whole lives, my 77 powerwagon, I pulled the "carpet" and it had the factory paint still shiny under there. So far its lived on the same block of the hood through 3 owners. That chemical converts iron oxide to iron sulfide, not totally permanent but works all right.

I would get new floor paneling, possibly cut some from pick and pull or just sheet metal of the right grade to cover up that spot and weld or braise . It the most permanent solution. Clean the area good (both sides) first.

I found the rusted out floorboard over my muffler to be 22 gauge (.035) and made replacement parts out of 16 gauge (.060).
The stock floor pan has strengthening ridges stamped in it and not being able to duplicate this I went with the 16ga.
Problem is it's too thick to bend and form cold, so, torch and hammer time to form it to the driveshaft tunnel and hump under the seat.
I havn't welded the pieces in yet, waiting for ordered drive roller for smallist wire (.023) in my Miller.
