lifter Q

On 4.0l's you have to pull the head. So basically once the head is off you just get yourself a magnet and pull them out. Then use some assembly lube and apply it to the new ones and drop them in.

Half marks - a magnet usually isn't strong enough. You'll need a "lifter puller", which is a sort of "inside clamp" that grips the lifter by an extant groove.

There's usually a narrow band of varnish (not quite 1/4" wide) around the foot of the lifter that holds it in - when you feel resistance to pulling, that's it. You'll be scraping that varnish off as the lifter comes out - the new one should just about fall into the hole. Coat the new lifter with assembly lube (foot and body) and go double on the foot.

NB: It is impossible to use "too much" assembly lube - it's oil-soluble, and it's all your lifter feet will have to protect them on first startup.

Why for are you thinking of changing the lifters, anyhow?

Cam swap. Where can I get a lifter puller?

Most well-stocked locals should have them. It's a longish T-handle dingus that has a sort of "collet turned inside-out" at the working end. There's usually two crosses to the T - one is a handle, and the other is a sliding weight in case you need a little extra "persuasion" to break the lifter loose (works like a miniature slide hammer.)
