lifespan of a d35 w/ 35's?

my tires are getting pretty bald and I am at 7"s of lift with stock size tires. I know I need to upgrade axles but I don't have the money to do it right now. So my plan is to get the gears out of a 4 banger with 4.10's and install those. I know that is still too high, but I have a 290 horse stroker and a turbo system I'm fabricating, and I have heard people say that 4.56's are almost too low with there strokers. I don't drive more than 50 miles a day, as long as I always have a set of spare axle shafts I should be ok right? This setup wont be for more than a few months, I just need time to finish all my curent fab projects and then I'm goin full width. Should I just wait or will I be ok?
TIA

very short especially with all that power you got, wouldnt recomend offroadin!:D

Well I would say extremely short.....

I snapped a D35 shaft in the crawfords rock garden with a 4 popper running on 3 pops and 33x1250's! I can only imagine what a strocked, XJ on 35's would do to one! Throw a 8.25 in there. they can be found fairly cheap. Hell there was just one with 4.10's in the for sale forum for $150! That is the price of gears!

If you are just wanting to go with 4.10's then pick up an 8.8. Most of them came with 4.10's and this will be more than strong enough for you. Plus you will get disc brakes. Just have to move the perches

I've ran 35's on a 35 and it didn't last long. If you do it keep on the pavement and even on the street use a light foot. Asphalt won't hesitate to snap the shaft any easier then the rocks.

Fixing broken D35s on the trail sucks...

I think you'll be ok for daily driving, but make sure it is an open diff. Do not wheel it until you go full width, unless you like holding up a group of drunk 4 wheelers  , and if you did, I would carry more than two sets of spares, even for the street driving.

I know I need to upgrade. I am going to put full width d44's under my jeep in a couple of months, I just need to have something to drive while I fabricate mounts for the front, install gears, and lockers. The gears will be $15 each prom the junkyard, I have trac-lock in the rear, should I remove it? This is going to be hopefully the break in period for my stroker, so my foot should be light. I really don't like the idea of not being able to wheel, but I guess it will motivate me to finish the new axles. My dad bet me 20 bucks that the d35 would be fine for at least three months, so I guess I'll put em on and win $20. If I do go through shafts too fast would it be bad to run a full width cherokee d44 in the rear and the d30 in front?

I think you just solved your own problem.....

Put the rear in and the new tires on and you should be fine. The D30 can live longer than the D35!

What the crap are you guys talking about?! Geez, he just wants something to be able to drive around town until the bigger axles are ready to swap in.

Dude, the D35 will be just fine on the street. Especially for just a few months. The stroker will eat up the carrier bearings rapidly, when compared to a stocker. But heck yeah they will live for a few months.

Don't drag race and avoid super-hard shifts. But, duh, you knew that already. You'll be fine.

If somebody can throw the hammer down with stock tires on dry pavement and not bust an axle, then some gentle driving with 44" tires would be fine for a while. Yeah the D35 is weak among axles, but geez, it's a truck axle - they don't just fall apart for no reason!

when you say "full width cherokee d44" do you mean the FSJs like the Wagoneers? Waggys are only 61.5 inches up front and like 59 inches wide in the rear, compared to 60 inches for the D30 and D35 you already have. They are by no means full-size, full size is considered around 65 inches and wider.

besides that, if you do get a different rear axle that isn't the same width, it will be fine. obviously make sure your gear ratio matches, and your lug pattern will probably be different front to rear.
