let's talk about kegging beer

It occurred to me that I haven't brewed a batch of beer for soem time.

I would usually do a couple batches over wintertime, usually lagers, taking advantage of cool basement temperatures...

I think part of the reason that I am avoiding brewing a batch is because of the bottling.

bottling is a royal pain in the ass!

Last time I was over at casa de Flowers, I got to witness how enjoyable homebrewing can be when you KEG beer!

no racking, no filtering, no boiling priming sugar, no damn bottling!

just dump the fermented beer in a keg, charge with co2 and go!!!!

so, I wanna get back into brewing again, but this time I wanna keg it!

who knows their stuff?

The restaurant I tended bar at many years ago had Bass Ale on tap. I could live on that stuff.
The last couple batches of beer I've brewed were a little "off" and I think it probably was in the bottling, so I would be interested in the keg method also.

isn't it interesting that there seem to be more bass-alike recipes then just about every other beer combined?

I think I'll swing by brew&grow tomorrow and see what they have, otherwise I might go to restaurant/bar supply, or see if Cullen (owner of Cullens on southport) can hook me up....

I still haven't the slightest idea what all goes into it....

have you learned anything about it yet?

My Dad and I have always done the dark beers. For our last three or four batches we have made some coffee stout. Pretty damn good.

I hate the bottling too and all the transfering from this one to that one and so on, but that is part of the experience. If ya just want beer, then buy some.

PS- The "off" taste could be because of bacteria. Only takes a little to ruin a whole batch.

You've got more experience than I do (and obviously more experience in drinking it :D ), so I'll be very interested in what you find out. If I could copy Kona Brewing Co.s Firerock Pale Ale, I'd be a happy (and mostly intoxicated) man.

So wash your hands after your done in the head and your batch should be clean of bacteria

The only thing I know about kegging was watching Timmy "infiniham" Flowers do it. I remembered thinking I was standing in the midst of a disaster that was unfolding, but the SOB pulled it off. damn good beer too! Tims friend owned a bar, and had the stuff....which is why I wanna try to work an angle like that....It looked easy enough...dump (or rack) put the top on, charge with co2 and get pouring! I think at this point, if I have to fill another bottle and cap it, I will never brew another batch...

yer out south yes? what do you guys have out there in the way of brew supply? Do you just truck up to Winemakers?

Also, do you have a LIKE-recipe for that beer you were talking about? Where are you getting your recipes from? I'm just pulling them from recipe books, but all the good ones came from recipe trades I made with the guys that used to own Lets Brew It which later became hopcats.....

I'm definitly gonna check out brew and grow tomorrow and see what I can learn.

This I know....I was referring to a previous post by someone else. And I think it was dog hair, or something to that end that caused our first batch to go bad.

B,
I have a Dole Selmix Lexington 2 Carbonator like the soda companies use with a CO2 tank and regulator from Coke. I tried using it to make carbonated water, but I haven't run it through a cold plate or fridge, so it loses carbonation instantly. It's basically a compressor with an expansion/mixing talk with a pressure switch. Is that what you'd need? I'll let you play with it if you think it'd do it for you.

Everything I know about brewing (not much), I learned from Mr.Beer, and that's where I get my supplies and recipes. My step-daughter got me the kit for Father's Day, and I've had two good and two not-so-good brews. The Firerock Pale Ale is similar to Sierra Nevada, but better, especially on tap at their brewpub in Kona. Mmmm, all this beer talk has made me grab another Sierra Nevada. Gotta practice for Winterfest.

I think my aunt and uncle are going to Kauai in February. If they'll be back before Winterfest, I'll have them bring back some Firerock so we can "analyze" it . I'm thinking the hops are usually the main factor in pale ales.

a co-worker got me started brewing and pointed me to homebrew.com

he also gets a monthly magazine that he pulls a lot of clone recipes from, i just can't remember which it is.

i'm still putting together my kit so what little brewing i get to do is with his equipment, but there is a forum on homebrew.com and we all know how those can supplement a hobby.
