Issue with Avatar Upload

Been receiving this error when attempting to upload an avatar image off my computer:

Warning: fopen(./customavatars/avatar17854_1.gif) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /includes/class_dm_userpic.php on line 260

This shows up at the top of the page above the logo.

The avatar in question is an 8kb 100x100 GIF file.
