Inheriting an 87 XJ

So this weekend I am inheriting an 87 XJ. Its a 4 door, 4.0, AW-4, 231. It has the 30 and a 44, so i'm excited about that. its got 132k on it. My uncle is giving it to me because he doesnt need it anymore. Not sure what all my plans for it are, but I'm definately excited to have another Jeep in the collection. I am getting rid of my Volvo disaster. Like XJGrl, I learned the hard way about buying a non-jeep vehicle. It was supposed to be an economical, inexpensive alternative to driving my heep while i'm lifting it, tearing it apart, or whatever. The sweedish terd got 18 mpg TOPS, and kicks and screams if you don't put premium in it (freakin turbo) , my jeep still gets 18-22 mpg on regular. So it cost as much to fill as the jeep, and needed it more frequently. I lowered it and tweaked the sway bars and stuff, It was fun to drive, i'll admit, very quick and fun. but there is no end to the funds being directed towards it instead of my jeep just to keep it on the road, so its gone.
All that to say, I'll take two jeeps over a jeep and a volvo any day. I'll probably keep the 87 pretty well stock for now, and maybe work a little budget boost and possibly even a 5 or 6 speed tranny into it someday. I'll put up some pics when I get it.

Congrats!
What year and model Volvo is yours? Ours gets 30mpg, but yeah, you have to run high octane.

its an 81 244 intercooled B21 turbo. I tried to adjust the air/fuel ratio for better economy but i couldnt seem to get it to adjust, and now it wont stay running. so maybe i adjusted something for the worse? I dont know. It could be a fun car, but its just not my thing. Its a 5 speed, it is fun, and it was also a florida car so there is no rust on it to speak of, the body is perfect. I'm hoping to ditch it for $600 b/o if anyone happens to be interested. It really would be a good fun car if you had the desire to work on it. but when i have a jeep that runs perfectly and is just awesome, its hard to want to work on a car i have to put on blocks just to get my head underneath. If it got 30+ mpg i would definately keep it...but it hasnt proven itself to be worth my keepng. like i said its not my thing . i just dont enjoy workin on it like i do my jeep.

I have an 86 240 that has got to be an engeneering masterpiece. Ridiculously dependable and durable. 27 mpg no matter what. 300,000 with minimal oil usage. Aside from regular maintenece, the only money it demanded was when I replaced the timing belt at about 270,000. 60 bucks and 2 hours later, she was going again.

yeah that is what i have always heard about them. My dad has an 86 240 auto, and has well with over 150 on it. It is a little rough to start but it runs fine, uses no oil to mention, and gets 25+ mpg. I was hoping that mine, being a 5 speed and a 2.1 instead of a 2.3 like his, would easily get 25-30 mpg. I have driven it incredibly light-footed and mostly highway and it still gets just over 18 mpg. I am sure it needs to be tuned up but I have just had it. It has 160k on it, the engine is incredibly clean, the oil is clean, it doesnt leak but a few drops a week, or smoke at all...but somehow it loses a quart of oil about every 1-2 tanks of gas? I'm excited to get this jeep and get rid of this car. I know how to keep a jeep running in top shape. This volvo leaves me pissed for hours every time i work on it. :flame:

I had an 81 or 82 Volvo 240 wagon (I've already forgotten, but it was the last year they had the 2.1 engine and computerless fuel injection), and it was a great car in its own way, durable and pretty reliable, and huge inside. But it was no economy car. I don't think I ever got over 21 mpg. It had a 4-speed automatic, but no lockup, and the non turbo engine was working its guts out all the time to keep it up to speed. It ate tires at a pretty good rate too. My 87 XJ was just as reliable and got better mileage.

Glad to hear you're getting rid of the Volvo. That's all you ever talked about! Can't wait to see pics of the new Jeep.

hey now, it was a fun car until the thrill wore off. I've gotten tired of it absorbing paychecks. I'm getting the new heep tomorrow so i'll get some pics up. maybe even some of it lifting its rear tire and pissing on the volvo haha. ;)

Hahaha, had something similar lately. But it was not a Jeep pissing on our Volvo:

Yeah, it was a pretty intense storm. They say it spawned a tornado elswhere in the region too.

Finally a pic. sorry it sucks. i ran out to my friend's house to borrow a camera tonight because i fainally had some time during daylight hours, and I came back with the camera, took this pic but it was too dark already. hence the blurryness. i tried. i will get some good pictures of it next week. going on vacation this weekend and no internet in those mountains hehe. enjoy the pic, just try not to get motion sickness.
