INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis police officer faces disciplinary action for using his police cruiser to make a political statement that many deemed offensive.
Officer James Quyle's cruiser was recently parked on Massachusetts Avenue when office workers spotted a bumper sticker they thought was highly inappropriate, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.
"On the laptop was a really large yellow sticker in all capital letters in black that said, 'Impeach Obama,'" said Sarah Harrison.
The message offended several office workers, so much so that Harrison snapped pictures and sent them to the police department and a member of the City-County Council.
"Everyone kind of had the same response. It's like totally inappropriate," Harrison said. "Kind of a shock, really, that this officer was stating his politically views so blatantly on public property."
The officer, who works the downtown district, was ordered to remove the sticker from his vehicle.
"He's a good officer. He's been on about 16 years," said Indianapolis police Lt. Jeff Duhamell. "He just made a mistake and he'll be disciplined for it."
The department has strict guidelines about what officers can put on their cars. A Crime Stoppers bumper sticker is permitted, but a campaign statement is a violation.
"It was something that needed to be changed, and I'm also really impressed by the response I got from the entire community," Harrison said.
Officers are also prohibited from installing boom boxes, excessive window tinting or objects that dangle from the rear-view mirror.
