If someone owes you money, how long do you wait before you break his legs?

Just had an incident with a prick who didn't want to pay up after giving him 2 months of leeway. The amount of money was trivial, but his attitude really pissed me off  Finally got on the phone with him and told him to pay up. Sucks being a nice guy sometimes. :tears:

I usually wait ONE pay period. That's plenty of time.

A fortnight - a month, tops. That way, I know they get at least one paycheck!

Oh - and I don't usually bother with legs, unless I'm just going to pry their kneecaps off. I prefer to leave a "permanent" reminder of what happens when they stiff the wrong guy...

I'm a nice guy - until it's time to not be nice. Then, you'd have better luck crawling naked up a saguaro cactus...

can someone spot me a few hundred K, i'm good for it, i swear, trust me,i'll give you a dollar a year, as payback, for 300 years, i promise. ok seriously, it's a good question that you will have to figure out yourself. too many variables, like are they someone you really like and want to help, or a relative, aquaintance, neighbor, etc., etc. many people don't loan anymore than they can afford to lose. it's like goin to Las Vegas, same philosophy.

Are we talkin closer to $10 or $300 or much more? Has he given you a legit reason to be late on payment or is he blowin smoke up your you-know-what? What's he got for collateral? Just me but I'd suggest doing anything but that which could put you behind bars or end up in an altercation.

If it is not a large amount, I would mark it down as a lesson learned. Of course, "a large amount" can be relative.

If I ever "loaned" money to anyone. It would be the kind of person where it'd be nice to be paid back. But I would have just given them the money flat out if they needed it. Anyone else, um, I'm not exactly a bank. I'll have to agree with the lesson learned take on this.

kill him in the face! his lesson learned

Slash his tires. You may not have got your money but at least you know he had to spend what he owed you to something other than his own entertainment and luxury (a/c, heating, cable, gas, food). Just do it after things cool down so he does not think it you. :laugh3:

To me, ive been burned. I got my money back after 2 months. God thing, because I was literally hours before I was going to "meet" him at his workplace.

Depends on the reason...

"My daughter has cancer, have to pay the bills" is a good one

"I forgot" isnt

On this same topic, what would you do if somebody owed you money for something they broke of yours? Say a motorcycle? It's only worth 2K, but they did 700 worth of damage. How long would you wait? I've called and went to his house multiple times, but with the same shady answer that his "buddy in florida" is getting replacement parts. Now he doesn't return calls? What should I do?

*And sorry for the hijack. I have no advice for you*

how long do you wait? .........hmmmm....well they usually have at least as long as it takes me to get from my house to their's, just after work, on the day they promised to pay .....but I used to repo alot of cars and I know how to be an assertive prick when the occasion warrants it.....but I never lend money w/o being in the lienholder spot on a car title either

Well, it's not like I lent this guy "money", but I did give him some tires because he "needed them", so I told him to pay me as soon as he could, which was supposedly in a month. 2 months later, this guy is running the tires on his jeep, and wheeling with me, and I still haven't seen my money. If he's got the money to spend to go wheelin, he's got the money to pay me, right? Whatever, he's supposed to be sending me the rest after he payed me $75 of the $200 he owed.

Again, cut all his tires on the trail and leave him there. They are your tires anyway!

Its a hard one. You want to help them out because they are your friend, but they quickly take advantage of that and screw you over. For me, I don't lend any money unless I care about them enough to not need it back. And for items, I don't give them over until every penny is in my hand. In the case of your 'friend' I might try a couple of things. The first being giving him a deadline to comply with and telling him what the consequence of missing it will be. For starters, I'd tell everyone I know the truth about what he did and I would never stop reminding him of it every time I saw him. Make his wheeling life miserable with reminders. If all else fails, wait till he's not around and take your tires back, wheels and all. When he freaks, tell him you'll give him back the whole kit and kaboodle the same second ALL the cash is in your hand. In my experience, once you have dealt with the cash issue, let him know you have no room in your friends for thieves, liars and scumbags and end your friendship...

Just a couple of cents...
