i have a 99 right now with 3.55, lock right and 31's, holds up great even with lots of skinny. just added some more lift to clear 33's, but first i am gonna stick some 4.56s within a couple weeks and in a month or two go to 33's. how well will it hold up or will i break things often. should i replace the shafts with some stronger ones and use the ones i have as spares. or will breakage not be to big of a concern as long as there is not too much skinny.

you didn't say what you have in the rear, so I'm going to assume this post is only concerning the strength of the front.

a '99 will have 297x or 760x u-joints which are pretty strong. I would put some new 760x joints in (assuming they aren't already near new) and tack weld the caps in. I have a front D44 that uses the same size u-joints and with 35s I didn't break any joints dragging my truck through Little Sluice and the rest of the Rubicon. I did however spit a cap on one which then bent the yokes of the shafts.

760x joints in stock shafts with the caps welded and 33s will be near bullet-proof, unless you're one of those guys that can break anything.

Ill agree you shouldn't have a problem, I run 33" swampers and the smaller joints withh no problems yet. Also correct me if im wrong guys but didn't the 97+ XJ come with low pinion D30s? if not what year did that start?
DIG IT!

The lockrite should NOT have to be replaced, since it takes the place of the spider gears. The carrier will need to be replaced, and the lockrite moved to the new carrier. Piece of cake!

I think I would try and find a new guy to do the work...

Based purely on my own opinion and the fact I had problems with a front axle with a LockRight, I would recommend against putting a LockRight in a front non-disconnect axle... unless you have a hub kit.

According to the mechanics that did the work on my front axle, they said they do work on axles with LockRights all the time. They tend to wear out carriers very quickly on a non-disco axle. Expect it to last about a year and have the carrier replaced (or worse). That was my experience and what they said.

lock right is already in there, no probs so far, will inspect everything next time i change the oil. i dont see why it would wear out the carrier

In my 98 hp30 I run 4.56s and a lockright with 33s. I am not easy on it, I have had no probs, and I would think you wouldn't either in LA, but carrying spare shafts is always a good idea. HTH.

we got some pretty nice rocks around, not in la, but in arkansas and texas. la is pretty much just full of mud

did you have a hardened cross shaft?
did you use NEW thrust washers?

if the answer is no to either of those questions, that's the reason it gave you problems.

if you don't know the answer, then again, i'd be willing to bet one of those is the problem.

ha yeah, that's why I said that...but even with the rocks, I'd just carry spare junkyard 297 shafts and see what happens.

Pat

anyone know what these run in a junkyard, and will any year xj axles work(excluding the lp in 00-01)

actually the LP d30 shafts have 297 joints and will swap right in. the only thing different with the LP d30 when compared to the HP is the gearset. everything else will swap right over. so any shafts from a 97 and newer TJ, XJ will work.

Shafts usually run about $50-75 EACH SIDE + shipping, sometimes they have the hubs attached. Also look for later Wranglers (TJ's) and 91' and newer XJ's with ABS, XJ's after about 95' all had the larger joints.

Pick-in-pulls have them even cheaper, but you do the labor of pulling them off. Just make sure you have both the 13mm 12-point socket and a 36mm socket.
