well, little background, i got to wyotech out here in WY and im goin to be taken chassis fab. with three moths to do it, i was lookin at this thread http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=96037 and was kicking around the idea of buildin either a front or rear or even both as some customs axles. then i got to thinkig what is out there to do for a drop in 3rd memeber? i was thinkin 9", 9" hybrids (cuz i was thinkin high pinion would be nice) , even yota 8". want to see what others had on ideas for this. i was thinkin 65"-63" wms and stock style set up. max around 36" tire. what u all think?

I though this was a cool Idea, Take HUMMER parts, a portal style IRS but make it into a high clearance Solid axle housing...Its a removable third. Would have a good wow factor.

that thing is badass and all, but just like the overkill ones, theres just that many more u joints to worry about in the shafts. dont get me wrong, that thing is sweeeeet. what does everyone think of the toy 8" centers? i mean, i see HP ones with like 5.29's all the time for short money.

If you go that route get Cruiser centers, 9.25" and much thicker ring.....FJ80 HP

yeah but don't forget the gear reduction out at the hubs. the hummer idea sounds killer. in fact, you could even get away with a smaller angle on those halfshafts, make the bottom of the diff even with say the tube into the portals. still have killer ground clearance from the portals and no diff below the tube. shallower angle means better life.

What do you do if you break a halfshaft if its all plated?
Looks like your would have to leave it open, maybe except for the bottom...
EDIT: Would outboard brakes be better than inboard? Some kind of odd/bad torsion loading comes to mind with inboard brakes and 40" boggers.
