High oil pressure, sporadic

Drove to work today, and happened to look at the cluster as the oil pressure pegged out at 80psi. Looked like it would have gone higher the way the needle jumped. Engine seems to have been running normal. Ran there for about 3 seconds or so, then slowly went down to about 60 or so. Then eventually 40. It did it again over lunch. It seems random, and not effecting performance.

Did an oil change this weekend, new filter, 1 pint MMO, 10w 30, just like every 3000 miles. 97 XJ, 4.0. The gauge seems to be working well otherwise, I am aware of bad pressure sender indications, and not thinking that is the cause... Unless it is sporadically shorting/disconnecting?

Any thoughts? Thanks..

Agreed. Make sure you get one for a gauge not a dummy light, though I think it's the same part either way on 97+ models.

Hmm... I will have to try and get in and test it. I think 97 is unique, I helped replace one on a buddy's 99, and we thought to try mine on his to see if it would fix his issue, but the sender was different. It was a 60 dollar part when my buddy got his... Can anyone beat that??

The 98 or 99 and later ones switch from the old flaky resistive style to a newer pressure gauge that requires a reference power supply and a ground, iirc. They finally realized that maybe an oil pressure gauge should be somewhat accurate.

I bought a cheaper aftermarket sender (BWD from Advance, as that was the only part in-stock here), but it didn't mate well with the factory plug, resulting in my gauge working sporadically. I would say go for the factory part, unless you're willing to gamble on the cheaper ones.
