I just got into Co Springs from Michigan. My 2000 XJ has a Dana 30 with a true trac and an 8.25 with arb. 4:56's I have put about 1500 miles on it before heading out. I changed all the fluids before leaving. On the way here it started making a noise in the front. Its a light clunking sound. It did it when I got off the expressway and turned into the gas station. Today it was quiet all day untill I was about 30 miles up 25. I stopped when it narrowed down to one lane and it began making the noise. It seemed to stop when I put the brake on while driving. It was stop and go for a short distance. At one point it made a loud bang. I figured it was all over. I couldnt stop so I kept driving. After picking up speed it stopped. I made it to exit 145. When I got off the exit and made a sharp turn I didnt hear it again. I checked things in the front. Jacked it up and spun the wheels. Nothing terrible sounding. I checked the oil in the front end and the transfer case. I stuck a screwdriver in and looked at the oil with a flashlight. No metal particles at all. I then drove down near Chestnut auto repair and did a tight circle in the road and then headed back to the motel. I put it in 4 wd and drove it back. (rear unlocked) I made 3 sharp turns and then started to back into a parking space. At that point it seemed to get bound up so I didnt force it. During that little test it never acted like it had chipped teeth or anything. No unusual noise.I know people talk about some lockers making noise. This one never did it during the first 1500 miles. The only thing different is I changer the fluid. Its the same Valvoline synthetic that I used before. Any ideas? I dont see metal in the fluid and it wont strip or make noise when I try to make it do it. Maybe there is no problem? Any ideas would be appreciated. Who are the good ring and pinion guys around here? Thanks for your help.
