Alright so I just bought a 220v Hobart Handler. Before I purchased it, I was told that I could use my dryer connection if I just changed out the outlet to the appropriate one. Well today I tried doing that. Got everything connected, plugged in the welder and nothing. I messed around with it for 20 minutes and couldn't get it to turn on. So I changed the plug back for the dryer and the dryer came right on. Any ideas why the welder wouldn't work? I'd like to not have to install a whole new outlet, but will if necessary. Any info would be great! Thanks!

are you sure the dryer outlet is 220/240? is this a full electric dryer? or does it have a gas connection aswell? how many wires were there and what colors, and what size?

Is it a 3 wired plug on the dryer plug or 4 wire? if its 3 wires you will have 2 hots and a grd 4 wires you will have 2 hots a neutral and a ground

what plug does the weld use? probably 3 wire?

let us know

if three wires, they will probably be red, black, and white. the red, and the black are your hot wires, the white or bare wire is your ground/neutral.

Alright so I've decided I'm just going to install a new outlet out in the car port. Any pointers? I don't think it should be too hard. I'm just a little confused as to what size wire I should go and what not. Any advice would be great, thanks!

2#8's and a #10 ground on a 50Amp breaker.

atleast that. it never hurts to go bigger on wire size. if it was mine, i would probably go with #6 because it is for a welder. you also need to tell us how far your service box is were you will be getting this from. the longer the run, the larger the wire. install a 50 amp breaker, and a 50 amp receptacle.
