hey neighbors to the west...

so i got a call just a bit ago from a buddy who sounds like he blew a transfer case coming down a mountain today. he lost 4hi and 2hi on an np231 and had to limp back to the hotel in 4 lo. normally i would tell my buddies to grow a pair and get on fixing it...however, he is on his honeymoon and they brought their old reliable xj as their mode of transportation. not knowing any shops there, he is stuck far from home with no tools and what im sure is a grumpy wife :)

anyone know any shops near there? or is there anyone who might be able to throw him a bone. im sure he would pay you for your trouble...from the sounds of it he will need a new case too so if anyone has one they might want to get rid of, im sure he would take it!

shoot me a pm on here or just respond here if you can help out! thanks NAXJA brethren.

Is it the tcase or the shifter? Did he check that it is actually shifting?

I would call Tomken Manufacturing and explain your situation. They may be able to recommend someone. They are standup folks.

I second the Tomken recommendation -- they are about 1/2 an hour south of you just outside Buena Vista, and undoubtedly have a spare case and the knowhow to help you out.

However, if that doesn't work out, and we need to shuttle some parts up there, I'm planning on camping outside of Leadville this weekend and can probably be a mule...

I tried to get it to catch in any gear in 4h and 2h and it wouldn't go anywhere

Super dumb question here, did you get underneath your jeep and try to shift the tcase by hand? I know my sons XJ tcase linkage constantly come apart and won't allow him to shift out of 4 low using the shifter from the inside.

So the handle moves, but the gearing doesn't change. Get underneath and check the linkage.

Do you mean you can move the shifter into all of the positions? It sounds like the linkage could be messed up. Maybe it has enough play in it to shift the tcase into neutral but not enough to move the tcase lever far enough to get in to 4 hi or 2 hi.

Definitely worth a try before you spend any money. You just need to move the tcase lever to the farthest position from where it is at.

Most important - Make sure your wife has her foot on the brakes so the jeep won't roll over you when you take the tcase out of gear.

lol

When it went south for sure it was in 2h and I transferred it to 4h and 4l trying to get it to roll using the engine. When I move first move the car in 4l it makes a bad rather loud metal sound both in drive and reverse.

methinks the case is grenaded...

I have a stock t case you can borrow. Do anything you like to it...sye or whatever, just get me a replacement of similar condition . Its in Lakewood.

Thanks for all the help guys. I really appreciate it. Right now we're planning on coming back to trailer it next week and hopefully we can find a t case at a junk yard or get it rebuilt.

I'll be leaving Colorado Springs and headed in that direction around noon tomorrow, so if it turns out you need parts shuttled up, let me know and I'll deliver for ya! Good luck, and congratulations on the nuptials!!

I'm now looking to sell this Jeep as I'd like to get a more fuel efficient car. It's currently in Centennial. Looking for $1500 but will consider air offers.
