Ok, So I'm still trying to find the noise coming from somwhere in my drivetrain. I pulled the T-case just now and Gear oil came pouring out of the Manual tranny. the last time i pulled the t-case this didn't happen. Although I WAS on a sloping driveway, facing downhill. Is that supposed to happen or is my prob in the Tranny? Sorry, not new to wrenching, but still learning bout trannies and t-cases. I had help doing my SYE, but figured it wouldn't be too bad to pull the t-case and check the bearings, cause that's what it sounds like.

Thanks in advance

Adam

Also, don't know if this makes a difference, but you know when you let the RPM's get to low by staying in too high a gear, and you get some pretty serious vibes, well when I do that it's 10 time worse than it ever was before

Unless the trans was hanging down lower than when it's supported by the crossmember, then it shouldn't have come "pouring" out - maybe a quick trickle and some dripping. But if it was hanging down, then yeah, you'll lose fluid.

When it's making the noises/vibes you're describing, could you feel them in the shift lever of the 5 speed? Do you have any issues with up or down shifting while driving(synchros grinding a bit)? Do the noises sound more like a gear "growling" noise coming from between the seats below the trans tunnel?

Are we working on a 231 or 242?

seems to shift pretty much ok. no gear grinding. It sounds more like growling. sometime it's worse than others. I can't really feel it in the shift, so much as the whole floorboard.

the input and rear output shafts on the t-case spin smoothly. the Front output makes just a little noise, but it sounds more like just the chain moving. How much sound should i hear fomr the front output?

I haven't cracked the case yet, as it seems to feel fine. The input shaft and rear output shaft spin smoothly, and quietly. The front shaft, only makes a little noise, but sounds to me like the chain moving. nothing excessive. Even the rear output shaft of the tranny seems ok. About as much play as a pinion gear of an axle

Put the t-case in 4wd, then grab both front and rear yokes. Turn them in oposite directions to check for play in the chain. If the chain is pretty bad, you'll actually be able to make it slap around inside. Otherwise, you shouldn't get much more than 1" or so more movement one direction or the other as you turn the yokes against the other.

Did you drain the fluid from the t-case? Color? Smell? Glitter in the fluid? Poke your finger around in the drain hole and see if you feel any pieces. Unfortunately, there's a magnet in the bottom of the case - dunno if you can feel that far over to where it is.

I just recently (one week ago) refilled the t-case so the fluid woudn't be that much of a tell. But I'll check. All the bearings that I could check seamed good and solid. The only one I couldn't really check would be the front input shaft on the Transmission. T-case seamed good. Wound up reassembling it cause I couldn't find the prob and have gone as far as I'm capable of (limited mechanical skills that I have). I've still got to refill the tranny and we'll see if it some how fixed itself, or I've got to try and find some money. Wonder how much the tooth fairy would give for a whole mouth full of teeth???

Well if the chain slack seems within limits, then I'm afraid that the growling sound may be coming from the planetary at the input end of the t-case. You might try to spin that input shaft with it in gear to see how that feels.

Dunno.

Yeah i checked that and it seemed to spin smoothly and quietly, in all posistions. Anyone know what size the tranny fill plug bolt is? I think it's a 15/16" or 1". Channel locks and a crescent wouldn't do it. So off to ACE to see if hey've got one.

Ok, for future ref. it's a rounded off, chewed up, beat on, 24mm.......which translates into: 24" Pipe Wrench. Got it all back together. Now we'll just see how it drives tomorrow on the way to work.
