Help! Clanking banging in 4 while turning

OK, just bought an XJ for cheap and I mean cheap, but the only problem is that in 4 it clanks (binds) in 4 wheel drive when turning. I could figure it out with my CJ, but XJ is new territory. It is fine when going straight, but when I turn it seems like it binds up (this is not usual 4 wheel turing issues as it does it on loose gravel too). It actually pops and jumps. I do know what one feels like normally and this is not normal. what could be the problem? It is an 87, 4.0. Could this be the vac. engagement problem? any thoughts on what it might be? thanks!

if it binds when going around corners you probably have a bad axle u joint. raise the front end in the air and spin the wheel by hand with the wheel straight it should spin uniformly. then turn the wheel in one direction all the way, spin the wheel again and see if it binds if so which ever wheel binded is the bad u joint

also check for play in the u joints also, some rust around the inside i=of the bearing caps indicate bad joints also

SO does everyone agree to just replace my U-Joints? (was going to do that anyways) no biggy as I am doing a lift so I can take apart everything at the same time. COuld it be anything else that is causing the popping/clanking when turning?

also anyone know the P/N for those? (87 4.0)

it does it on the street and on a gravel road so its not normal axle hop.
