Calif. Man Shoots His Way Out Of Sinking SUV

Man Shoots Out Window To Escape Sinking SUV After Veering Off Northern Calif. Road Into Creek

ROSEVILLE, Calif. (AP) - A driver whose SUV plunged into a Northern California creek after he was startled by his hands-free cell phone device escaped the sinking vehicle by blasting out the window with a handgun. The 28-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately available, is an armed security guard at Thunder Valley Casino, north of Sacramento. He sustained minor injuries in Sunday's accident.

A spokesman for the Roseville Fire Department said the man was traveling northbound on Industrial Avenue in Roseville when the cell phone device activated. The driver was startled and veered off the road through the guardrail. The SUV landed in Pleasant Grove Creek.

He used his gun to shoot himself out, then flagged down a passerby.

Hooray for survial/defense gun use!

I bet he was texting.

It would also be useful to drill a hole in a wall, like if you were installing satellite TV or something.

Maybe he realized how stupid he was going to look, got depressed, decided to end it all, tried to shoot himself in the head, and missed. The bullet shattered a window, water rushed in, and he decided to get out because while he wanted to suicide, he didn't want to drown in the process.

Wonder how long it'll take him to realize he could have rapped any of the side windows with the front sight. The tempered glass would have broken right out.

Honestly, I would never think of that, though I would think of shooting a window out... and it costs what, a buck more to shoot it out even if you're using large caliber ammo?

I like to think I wouldn't be startled off the road by my phone ringing though.

ATF also like to use a muzzle end of a weapon for an earplug at the range...

sad but true i remember reading about someone that did just that, shot a hole thru the wall and killed his wife i think who unknowingly moved into the line of fire outside while he was shooting thru from inside for the cable wire routeing

SEDALIA, MO. (AP) -- Officials are trying to decide whether to file charges against a Missouri man who fatally shot his wife while trying to install a satellite TV system in their home.
Thirty-four-year-old Patsy Long of Deep Water was pronounced dead Saturday evening after being shot in the chest with a .22-caliber handgun. Her husband, Ronald Long, fired the shot from the inside of their home after several unsuccessful efforts to punch a hole through the exterior wall using other means.
Henry County Sheriff's Deputies say the woman was hit by the second of two shots fired by her husband.
Investigators say a person involved in such a case normally would be charged with manslaughter, but that

The tempered glass would have broken right out.
you gotta get the edge, that would be covered inside the door jamb if the windows are up!
even then, its not allways so simple. i install/break glass for a living, and peices of tempered have about a 1 out of 3 chance of survving a toss into a dumpster... often times it takes 5 or 6 whacks with the metal part of my mallet to break em, and these arent pussy swings either. these are man swings, with a 12oz mallet... good luck! i think he made a good choice.

Unfortunately, I think the young man that saved his own life with a loaded handgun inside of a motor vehicle in CA is subject to arrest for transporting a firearm and ammunition in his vehicle, accessible to an occupant, without the firearm being disassembled so it isn't usable.

Too bad, but that is life in the PRCA.

Unless he was using the high quality plastic stock Glock sights. Then he'd be in the morgue...

For laughs watch episodes of Cops when they try and bust the side windows of vehicles with their batons, and then imagine hitting a window with a Glock.

Tempered glass is funny stuff. It's not how hard you hit the glass, it's what you hit it with. It's tough as hell, but anything that can scratch the glass surface destroys it. 'Has to do with the hardening process. That's why tempered glass has to be cut to size before it's hardened. Once hardened, anything that disrupts the top layer of the glass goes right through it.

Dig up the episode of Mythbusters where they spend some time breaking car windows under water. They took out a window with one of those spring loaded prick-punch tools. Just held it against the glass and let go.

And yeah, that episode of cops was pretty funny. Again, rounded edge(on the nightstick) couldn't damage the surface.

Capt. Nemo: Damn! 'Forgot about the plastic pimple on the Glock. I guess he'd have to use the corner of the slide, unless he got one of those fancy "melt" jobs to remove all the sharp corners. Of course, if he did that, he'd probably have a custom sight blade installed at the same time. :D

Xcm: Put away the hammer. Go to a hardware store and buy a cheap glass cutter. Next time you get one of those windows, set the glass cutter in the middle of the window and push(wear gloves and eye protection) see just how little force is required to break tempered glass. It's kind of fun to play with in a, "making a mess and breaking stuff" sort of way.
