So something strange happened to me today. It was pretty aweful, and I have never heard of it happening, so I thought Id ask if this was just a freak thing or if others have encountered it...
I went wheeling with a friend, and we were about an hour into the trip when we stopped for a bit at the end of a road. I filled up my gas tank right before we left, probably had driven 50 miles by that point.
As we are chatting, we notice the sound of air leaking somewhere on my jeep (1991 XJ). We thought it may have been a tire losing air, so we were trying to pinpoint it. I randomly decided I should let any extra air out of the gas tank to eliminate that as a source of the air leak. I guess I thought of this because of all the air that usually comes pouring out (especially in summer) when you take the cap off to fill up.
So i start unscrewing the fill cap, not thinking anything of it....then BAM! A good 2 gallons + of hot gas comes shooting out of the fill hole with some serious force, hitting me in the face, eyes, mouth, and most of the rest of my body.
So what the hell? I was on a hill, with the front of the jeep facing downward. all we could come up with was the air in the tank expanded (it was 105F + today) and somehow I was in a position the air couldnt get out of the fill hole without pushing gas out first?
I must say, it was all up in my eyes and contacts, and no part of me was gas-free enough to get them out, plus I cant see without them. So ended up spending the next 8 hours of wheeling mostly clothe-less and pouring eyedrops in my eyes. It was a totally cool trip, so it made up for it...
Anyone ever experience this? Does that explaination make sense?
